RSS Feed?

Post by Pwolf » Tue Oct 12, 2004 12:59 pm

Trythil shot out the idea yesterday, but we both have our concerns why it wouldn't work so well... anyone else have any opions on this? i think it would be a neat idea to add to the site. but bandwidth would probably be a major issue. i'm not familiar with how to set up RSS, but i'm sure there are ways around some of the bandwidth issues.

Make it available only to donators.

Well the question I have, is what do you want the RSS feed to do or display?

derobert was talking about this. He likes the idea. The only questions were:

A) What

and

B) How

i think that's a great idea
a feed for new vids on the block would make the most sense to me. and maybe add info like creator, and anime and music used.

i dunno how much of a problem bandwidth would be- but i would imagine it'd be less than the bandwidth from html page views- and fraction of bandwidth from local downloads.

greenjinjo: rss is a way of getting constantly updated information to people or websites who are interested, using xml. to receive feeds from your computer, you can use one of these apps. most are free.

You could set it up how some new content servers do it. You set up your own preferences as to what you'd like your feed to display. Here's a list of examples I can think of (each item on the list is something that could be represented as a new "headline" in the RSS feed):

1) Any new video added to the database
2) Any new downloadable video added to the database
3) Any new locally hosted video
4) Any new video added by a specific creator/studio (you could list multiple creators to watch)
5) Any new video using a specific anime (you could list multiple animes to watch)
6) Any new video using a specific artist (you could list multiple artists to watch)
7) New guides
8) New journal posts by specific creators
9) New topics in a specific forum
10) New sticky topics in a specific forum
11) New updates to the contest section (updated submission deadlines, etc.)

Or you could forego all of that and just make it so you add new headlines specifically to the RSS feed which are created by somebody designated to do so. Like just for new site announcements or for the release of some big awaited multi-editor project.

It would probably require a lot of work and I don't really know if the time required would really be worth it. But nevertheless the idea has merit :)

I like this idea better than the sending out emails idea I had a while back. Probably requires less bandwidth too..
