Logins from multiple IPs

Post by BogoSort » Fri Oct 01, 2004 9:46 pm

Is it unreasonable to get the main portion of the site to allow being logged in from multiple clients at once? I, for one, would certainly enjoy the ability to be able to browse the site on multiple computers at once.

Some of us have multiple computers and connect for multiple machines at once. It's kinda a pain to have to relogin everything you swtch the connection from one machine to the other.

I second this. I have access to a laptop, desktop, and a number of machines in a computer lab. Often I'll switch from one to the other.

But doing this increases the chance that someone other than you can log in as you at the same time as you.

Why do you need to switch between computers/connections while logged in, anyway?

Sometimes I get up from one computer, move to another while poking around. Other times, I want to download files onto a server of mine to show videos to friends who don't want to have a membership. It's easier to browse on my desktop and just toss over a wget command over to the server. Than having to go through all of the hoops of logging in.

Now, theoretically, if you gave them a username and a password you wouldn't have the problem of needing to log in in different places, would you?

If I had a different username and password for all of my computers, that'd involve multiple accounts which is frowned on by the site(though there are many who do so anyways). Plus I wouldn't have such access to my own information to modify. And I happen to put videos on my own servers such that my friends outside of this site can see amusing videos.

Just because you have no use for it doesn't mean that it doesn't benefit others. Now if one of the programmers said that it'd require too much effort, I wouldn't mind, but it's always worth a shot to ask.

I wasn't saying that you shouldn't be able to do it at all, I was just wondering if the extra account would fix it.

So since you said it might, I'm PMing you. =\

Look, I'm just requesting that logins don't automatically log you out from any other location where you might be logged in. It's more of a convenience issue than anything. I was just citing examples of where it might be useful. I could very well just make my own duplicate accounts(since it's one of the mostly unenforced rules), but that doesn't get me around what I think would be a convenient improvement on the site. If you're going to argue me on the point, then tell me why it's a difficult/annoying thing to implement due to the current construction of the site.
