Faster way to import?

Post by Guld_Bowman_02 » Fri Sep 24, 2004 4:43 pm

Hi, everybody...

I have a two part question regarding Avid Free DV and importing raw footage. I successfully managed to get my DVD footage by following the guids (which are very GOOD, I might add), but importing into Avid is sooo slow. It won't even recognize the HuffYUV codec (all I get is black), nor will it even think about dealing with an AVS script. So I decided to "work around" this problem by using my PS2 as a DVD player and capture via S-video thru my Sony Digital 8 camcorder, into fire wire; in real time. This alternative worked great, even though I had to sit and "watch" the footage as it was being captured. I know that I'm potentially loosing some quality b/c

a) I converted to analog by going thru S-video, even though the
camera "digitizes" the signal...
b) color space conversion (according to the guids) but usually one or two
is not that noticable
c) DV, although it looks good when compaired to others, is a lossy codec

Having said all of that, my first question:

a) If a quicktime avi wrapper was avaliable, would it speed up the import
process
b) secondly, is there a way to use an AVISynth script with Avid

Just from browsing the forums, it seems like alot of people are using either Vegas or some incarination of Premeir, neither of which I have acces to, at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated and any sarcasim wold not be taken personal. Thx to all...

If the issue is just that Avid doesn't like Huffyuv as a codec, you could save the footage as uncompressed; it'll be huge, but probably the most compatible way of doing it. You could also try other lossless codecs such as corePNG, Alparysoft, AVIzlib, or the best in my completely unbiased opinion: Lagarith (http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html). You can also check to make sure that the "always suggest RGB" option is checked in the Huffyuv settings incase the problem is a colorspace issue.
