taking screen shots of videos

Post by FabianN » Mon Sep 13, 2004 1:28 am

I wounder how you can take a screen shot of the video.

When ever I try, all I get is black where the video should be.

Is there some kind of program that I need, or is there just a trick that I don't know?

when I need to get a single frame out of a video I use virtualdub. load the video in vdub, find the frame you're looking for, and then under the video menu select "copy source frame to clipboard" (or press ctrl+1) and then open the image editing software of your choice and paste the image into a new document. (for me this means opening photoshop, creating a new document, and hitting ctrl+v)

doing it this way allows you to be extra picky about what frame you want, where as trying to capture it through a media player would seem too tricky, as I assume you're trying to pause the video at the right moment first.

note, if you do try this, I've noticed it won't copy the frame to the clipboard unless I manually select the frame. in other words, I scroll through the file to find the clip I'm looking for, but until I hit the frame forward or frame back button, it won't copy anything.

PowerDVD also has a screencap function -- just hit "C" and the current frame is copied to the clipboard.

If you're using the WMP then just hit the "Print Screen/SysRq" button (it's in the top of the key board).

That usually does it for me.

That approach usually produces the "black screen where the video should be" problem for most people, from what I've heard (here) and seen (on my own comp).

Sometimes.
It's not the norm in my case to have problems with this.
When it works the results are great.
Got a perfect shot out of FFVII: Advent Children that way.
