What rules/ stats do you set making a AMV?
I have rules I have to follow in order for a Music video to work for me. If a song has nothing to do with it, I won't make it. my standards.
The clips have to go with the words of the song. If the lyrics have no preferance to a scene, find a clip to match the mood and it has something that matches a down beat. Try to fit the mood as much as you can.
AMVs aren't just things you should just throw together. For Me each Music video is a story. It can either do with the song or scenes. Or it can almost make a story of it's own if put together right.
Unfortunatly I apply this to Vids I watch as well. It anoys me when People pick a great song but just throws clips that have nothing to do with the words or mood.
What about you? do you have any guidelines you follow when making a vid?

Interesting you should bring this up. As an amv creator for 2 years now I have always stressed the importance of lyrical sync. For it tells a story if you pull it off the right way and shows that there are different ways to interpret the lyrics. As for action videos. You can still have a good one with lyrical sync you just have to rely on faster cuts and editing but yet still maintain the story. Upbeat/Rhytm on the other hand these amv's can go either way. In my opinion action videos are probably the hardest to pull off lyrically wise because you get caught up in the pace of the music.
Well back to work on my next amv now.

i have to agree with the whole "right video clips" for the right mood, like if there a really intense part in the song you shouldnt have someone just walking down the street!
but i think there are exceptions to this, take my most recent amv for example... in the last scene spike is walking down the satairs injured in a really intense part of the song, now call me crazy but i think it looks really good.

As always, I prefer not to have guidelines. Because each video has it's own unique demands, techniques, etc., and I'm aiming for different things with different projects.
The only guideline I have for making videos is translating my sense of the music into the animated visuals. That's about it. What this actually means varies, and I don't think strict adherence to any technical maxims will do me any good once you realize what sort of music I'm mostly involved with

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

My main rule for all my AMVs is flow. Occasionally I'll miss a beat, or the words don't match what's going on, but if there's a constant flow and a good amount of emotion going on with the video, then I'm satisfied with it. But I can't set rules for every video I make. Like Otohiko said, every video has it's own unique style so. I also feel sometimes lyrical sync can be a bit tedious at times and boring.

Depends entirely on what I'm doing. I tend to focus exclusively on one aspect of an AMVs at a time so my guidelines change each time. Some videos were guided by effects, others had enhancing the songs mood as a guideline, and occasionally my guideline was 'Hey, I was tired and it sounded like a good idea at the time'.

i think my biggest personal guideline is i can't FORCE an AMV. The idea has to just come to me, like one of my paintings or anything else, trying to MAKE a song fit an anime usually turns out fairly unsuccessfully. I am not going to mix my favorite song and my favorite anime, just cause i happen to like the 2
