A thought on pre-concieved AMV ideas...

I was just watching Hakura's Eden video for the first time. Dunno why I haven't up until now (the vids been out for years) but meh, I finally got it. Well, to me it was a perfect example of someone taking a very specific aspect of an anime (in this case, Vash and Knives' differing philosophies of life) and finding a song that exemplified that perfectly. Most character profiles are done in much the same way, an aspect of anime that works perfectly with a song.

So what happened to that? It seems so rare nowadays to see a video where the anime's true plotline or character developement is used. Many vids these days seem to just take their own concepts and go with them using effects and whatnot to emphasize their own meaning (if there is one at all).

My main point is that AMVs are moving further and further away from the actual anime, and becoming more and more their own thing. So does anyone else still try to make AMVs to bring out specific parts of the actual anime they love? My last video was a character profile that's gotten many comments like "This reminds me of an oldschool character profile vid from back in the day". I didn't realize how true it was that people had just stopped making them so often until I really thought about the past year's vids I've downloaded. Am I the only one who misses "the good ole days"?

Anyway I perfer to look for songs that are closely related to the anime plotline and characters. It makes the vids more noticable and clever.

95% of the "good videos" of this past year are complete shit. People's expectations are dropping further and further, and that in turn causes quality to drop as well. I'm glad your posting this Vegita because now at least someone else is vocalizing what I've been screaming here for about a year now. I definitly miss the way things used to be done.

But on the bright side, I think things are headed for a major backlash sometime soon. This type of shit can only go on so long and as soon as a new wave of good anime comes out of Japan I hope people will return to making videos that have something to do with the show and not a floating fucking piano stripe or a picture-in-picture shot of someone's tits. So many videos now, I'm sitting there wondering "why did you pick this song?"

In the mean time, the only thing you can do about it is bitch about it like me, and continue to make videos that rock

That seems to be a problem with me as well. A lot of the shows that's came this year just didn't spark any interest in me, so when people started making videos to them, I just couldn't really enjoy the videos.

I remember watching videos using anime that I haven't seen and just getting FLOORED to run out and somehow see that preticular show (which is how I discovered most of my anime). That doesn't seem to happen much now.

The U.S. and Japan both have a similar problem, their movie and tv series industry has been churning out more crap than good lately.

I call them impact videos. They are videos which survive on novelty and are designed to eyecatch. Lets face it, AMV contest judging is on impact of a video after one viewing and not on any studied artistic scale. AMV's are more and more like short attention span TV.

Additionally, AMV's that draw on a series implication are only enjoyed by those that have seen the series as well, where these impact videos that go their own can be enjoyed with no knowledge of the series and wider birth of audience.

Last, the nature of the beast is these videos win, and thus will be imitated. Truthfully the only AMV classification that remains untarnished is drama, but such videos are often forgoten soon after they are seen because another impact video gathered attention - just like the guy with the lampshade on his head is remembered from the party, but not the guy who simply mingled.

And here I am, thinking that I'm a crappy editor because I don't know the cool editing techniques and almost completely rely on plain footage and simple filters.

I don't know, I don't think highlighting aspects of anime is enough when thinking up a concept for a video. Well, not enough for me. On the other hand, you can't avoid the anime storyline and other such 'baggage'. So, if you're like me, you try to take a weird angle and use things in your own way, but you still try to use this 'baggage' to your advantage.

Character profile in their basic state are still around though, as are most of the 'conventional' types of vids. The problem is that a lot of the more experienced, competent editors these days shun them - maybe because they're just bored with the idea of making something like that.

Thats what I was going for with: What is it Good For? As a matter of fact I was afriad it would be a little too on the nose, thus losing points for originality. On the other hand, I don't mind when people take an anime in another direction, I kinda like that. Just so long as I know what I'm getting, an anime set to music, or someones interpretation of an anime set to music.
