You have to understand that the movie is seriously rushed version of the manga (if I remember correctely, I read somewhere that Rintaro, the director of the movie wanted to make it an action movie); there's practically no room for character development of any of the members (plus that inclusion of that water guy which was SUPPOSED to be part of Yuto's power as well as his spears) unlike the TV series. There are two different endings because the X/1999 manga hasn't even finished yet in Japan so the respective producers has to come up with their own ending.
