Just use the null transform and resize filters in VirtualDub.

Suprisingly enough, NOBODY is able to tell the difference. Most people will even think you used RAWs.

if you crop off an even amount as on the bottom as the sides (i.e. 44 off botton; 22 off left 22 of right) and then resized (without NearestNeighbor); then yeah, your method would be more stealthy...

Well, to keep the aspect ratio the same(assuming 4:3 TV series) it'd be more like 29 off left and 29 off right, but yeah. :wing:

(actually, 44 off the height would mean 58.6666666666666666666666666667 off the total width, but pixels don't cut into fractional values too well...)

Every time I cut subs out of my videos, I just take some number of pixels off the bottom (usually ~35), and then re-size to 640x480.

Sure, it results in image distortion, but it's hardly noticeable. I've even fooled somebody into thinking that I got Guardian Hearts RAWs.
