I disagree with this under one condition. If the IDEA is original enough, you can still pull it off, even with overused videos. Or even the editing style, if original enough can pull good videos out of overused bands/songs. Also, I don't personally count a band overused so much as the individual song. I hate when people call a vid unoriginal just because it uses Evanessense, yet its the only one with that particular Evanessense song on the org. Especially if its in a different style from her others.kingmob_867 wrote:Well said!!Undertow wrote:Good to overuse yeah, there are a lot of those out there (and i f**king hate slipknot). If you want bad ratings and people telling you "nothing i haven't seen a million times already" go and work with over used bands and overused series. But if you want people telling you you make original stuff, than use original stuff, but that's all up to you
But thats just my opinion.

You are so wrong and here's why: The average age of people on this site 14-20 (and 20 is pushing it)yrs old. Also if you look at 30 MOST USED MUSICAL ARTISTS you'll see that Linkin Park, Evanescence, System of a Down, Disturbed, Metallica, and Korn are just a few of the bands that get used over and over and over again. What does all this mean? It's means that alot of the same unorginal shit gets made over and over again. I'm not saying that I'm the greatest AMV maker ever but what I am saying is that it might be time to widen your listening habits. Last week my brother had to explain who the Ramones where to a 19yr old. God that makes me feel old. Anyway the point is try listening to some older stuff and also check this thread out http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... hp?t=38982Bakadeshi [AuN Studios] wrote:I disagree with this under one condition. hmm.... I failed to see how you proved me wrong. Me and you are talking about 2 diferent things. I said that it is possible to make an original video to an overused song, IF the editing style or the concept is original enough. All those crap amvs your talking about don;t fall into this category because they are using the same old random clips to song editing. nothing original about that. My point still stands.kingmob_867 wrote:You are so wrong and here's why: The average age of people on this site 14-20 (and 20 is pushing it)yrs old. First of all: The Ramones are the shit. Though I actually prefer the Misfits (with and without Danzig) for some odd reason.
Second of all: It's possible to produce an original video using a commonly used song or anime. Enough effort and a fresh idea can make a trite set of ingredients into something new. The real problem probably lies not in the fact that some songs/bands are overused, but that the songs and bands that are almost always of such a nature as to make finding alternate angles difficult, and to attract large fanbases of uninspired adolescents carrying around some vague sensation of causeless anger.
For instance: while early metal music was a fusion of blues, rock, and baroque music - containing both simple, energetic riffs and complex formations of melody and counterpoint - "nu-metal" bands like Slipknot seems to consist of seven people sharing a stage and making as much random noise as they can while one of them grunts unintelligable lyrics that supposedly convey some deep message about unbearable inner pain to a bunch of bored suburbanites. This hardly lends the genre to attracting a particularly bright or mature audience (even early metal had a hard time with that), and does lend the genre to mindless, themeless videos (even the professional ones tend to be mindless and themeless, nevermind the fan-produced ones).
Still even something as mindless as most nu-metal can be used creatively - see DokiDoki's "Lollipops, Sunshine, and rrrRRRrrr":
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=24001
It all lies in how creative the person making the video is being. The correlation between song overuse and low video quality seems to have more to do with the kind of generic, least-common-denominator MTV-playlist crap tends to be popular than the fact that it has been used before. Often the first one made doesn't seem to be any better than most that follow, so it's not a matter of people ripping each other off, it's just people making bad videos.

All of that having been said, the process of making an AMV should begin with a point of inspiration, some epiphany where you hear a song or see a scene in an anime you are watching that makes you think "wow, this would really go well with...". Then try to come up with a solid theme and scenes for the rest of the song. If you can, you are ready to go ahead with the video. If you can't, then you need to find another approach.
It is usually easier, if you are really stuck, to come up with a song you like first - and then try to find the footage to match the song rather than going the other way around. This is because a two to six minute (or, if you're me, four to twenty minute) song tends to be a lot more focused than an eight-hour series - and the song tends to dominate the video's theme over the visuals (hence the difference between a music video and a video short that happens to have a soundtrack). At least with the song you know how much video you need to collect, and have some thematic template to work around.
And, as someone else said earlier, pick your song from among your own favorites - preferably something you know well and have listened to for long enough to know it's not just a flavor of the week. Try to think of a story for that song, a cast, and a set of scenes. This will give you a solid starting point from which all else should come neatly together to the best of your technical ability.

If you're looking to expand your musical collection, here are a few of my suggestions for great albums that contain a good abount of depth and variety. Most of them are mainstream enough that I think people other than myself would like them, so you should give a few of them a listen:
Rock/Popular Music:
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Paranoid
Jethro Tull - Aqualung, Songs from the Wood
King Crimson - Eyes Wide Open (DVD), In the Court of the Crimson King, Red
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?, Electric Ladyland
Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle
Beatles - Revolver, Abbey Road
Blue Man Group - Audio, The Complex
The Doors - LA Woman
Type O Negative - The Least Worst Of
Nine Inch Nails: Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral
Bauhaus: Crackle (or In the Flat Field, if Crackle is unavailable)
VAST: V.A.S.T., Music for the People
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Thyrty
Pink Floyd: Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall
Jazz/Swing/Jazz-inspired Music:
Jaques Loussier - Jaques Loussier Plays Bach
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, My Funny Valentine
Glenn Miller - In the Mood
Lois Armstrong - Anything really, it's all good.
Fiona Apple - Tidal, When the Pawn
Norah Jones - Come away with me...
Classical Music:
Anything performed by Yo Yo Ma or Hilary Hahn.
Bach, Mozart, Beethovin, Chopin, and Debussy for the best of each of the major eras of classical music.
Rap (sorry, all I really know are these three and the NWA/Dre/Eminem lineage - though I hear Tupac and a few others put out some great albums in the 90's):
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday, Temple of Boom (Cypress Hill III)
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Wu-Tang Forever
Run DMC - Greatest Hits (for something a bit lighter)

All that should give you something new to listen to and possibly use in your videos.

I have a nice idea but it's probably too complicated to amke into an AMV.
Take a bunch of instrumentals. A lot. Mix, blend and forge it into something good. You now hav original sound. Now you have to try and use a song that no one has heard before and is too original to look at other pplz for help.
Unlesss some1 did that already

Songs for AMV
The anime really doesn't matter if you have a good song and a good idea of how to use it, that is unless your song is similar to many other videos with that anime and type of music (example: Dragon Ball Z/Eva with anything by Evanesence, Linkin Park, Metallica, System Of A Down, etc.)
Here are some "different" songs that aren't seen often if at all on a-m-v.org but would still make excellent videos:
Anything from At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta, Motion City Soundtrack, My Chemical Romance, Coheed & Cambria, and Saosin.
"Under Pressure" cover done by The Blood Brothers or also from them "The Six Nightmares Of The Pinball Masquerade", "Kiss Of The Octopus", and "Fucking's Greatest Hits"
Murder By Death - "The Desert Is On Fire", "Killbot 2000", You Are The Last Dragon (You Possess The Power Of The Glow)", and "Holy Lord, Shawshank Redemption Is Such A Good Movie!"(<--best name for a song ever!).
The Fall Of Troy - "Ghostship Part Four"
Wings Of Azrael - "Ceramic", "A Breath That Ends What Chokes Begin", and "Auburn Road".
Alexisonfire - "Pulmonary Archery" and "White Devil" (by the way, it's pronounced "Alexis On Fire")
The Shins - "Mine's Not A High Horse"
The Faint - "Agenda Suicide"
Underoath - "When The Sun Sleeps"
Dead Poetic - "Molotov" and "New Medicines"
That should do for now. Even if you don't make these into videos you should still listen to the music, it's all stuff you could learn to like.
(P.S.: Murder By Death is not what you think it is if you go by just the names alone. Heh-heh.)
