Evolving Tastes
So today I decided to sort through my AMV collection, which is aobut 4 years old and I discovered an interesting thing...my tastes have become a lot more sophisticated.
Apparently, it used to be that as long as I already enjoyed either:
a. the song
or
b. the anime
I would at least take some liking to it. And if I enjoyed both the song AND the anime, then apparently I thought it was just the best thing since slice bread.
I've reached a point though where that just doesn't cut it anymore, many of these older videos in my collection just seemed kinda...boring. It's like, okay I like listening to the song but it's a lot like listening to my favorite song and then just seeing some anime series out of the corner of my eye with the sound turned off. Just doesn't do it anymore I'm afraid.
At this point when I watch an AMV I want to see a TRUE blending of the two forms, perfectly aligned together with a level of fusion that makes you see the two forms a single unique new form...otherwise, what's the point really?

Yeah, stuff like that tends to happen the more you edit. It's like your mind is subliminally increasing expectations based on both your and other people's work. It's made it very hard for me to find videos I REALLY enjoy of late, not to say that there aren't ones out there that I find decent. But finding videos that I can watch on a loop has become a rarity whereas it used to seem to happen all the time.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

Not so much with me though. Perhaps it has to do with my general 'ease of adjusting expectations', but I still love the good old videos. I might criticize them more technically, here and there, but I'll still enjoy watching them every bit as much as before

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I only really enjoy videos that are either as good or as better as my own videos. My mind expects a certain level of quality from myself and that applies when I watch other people's work as well.
If the video is worse than what my mind expects Ill just sit there and pick it apart as I watch it, enjoying nothing.

"Memories dance" is something that I'll always enjoy watching. The mood was set incredibly perfect and the song is one of the catchiest I've heard in my entire life. I agree with all the other comments above too.

Huh, I often expect a higher level of quality from myself than from others. This pertains to AMVs too; I still haven't quite reached my level of expectations (or hopes perhaps) in my own videos, but I still enjoy videos on my level.Beowulf wrote:I only really enjoy videos that are either as good or as better as my own videos. And I, too, am getting more picky I guess, though I may have started out more than averagely picky. But I'm now paying more attention to the video, whereas before, if it was a song I liked, it would have had to screw up super-badly for me NOT to like it (unless the video was creepy or something, drama vids grew on me slowly).
But then, by the time I started opping, I was semi-picky, but still unsure what all affected my liking of a video (still happens occasionally), and sort of out of the whole anonymity of the internet thing, phrased things pretty harshly (more than I ever do in real life unless I'm really angry or something). I've since mellowed out on the comments a bit, and try to word it so the creator will learn the most and have their feeling hurt the least while still being honest (not always easy as I'm not very good at it so some people still take it the wrong way and get a bit offended).
I do still like some of the first few videos I saw; some of them are on my favorites list.

I don't know. I've gotten picky on the technical side, to be sure... but a simple but well-edited video that only uses cuts and fades will still get as positive a reaction from me today as it would have two years ago when I was introduced to AMVs.
If I like the music and/or the concept's good, and the editing is solid, I'll probably enjoy it regardless of how impressive the effects were... so in that regard, my tastes haven't changed.
A perfect example of such a video: Anime is the Remedy. It looks like a video from 2001 (or earlier) in its simplicity and straightforward editing style, yet it was actually done in late 2003... and I really liked it. Perhaps because it doesn't need effects to get the points across.
