Codec Package?

Okay, I turned my old laptop (now missing) into swiss cheese whith all the various codecs and video thingamabops I DL'ed and installed.

My friend wants to be able to watch just about any video I can find for them...

Whats a good list of solid codecs I need to go out and get to make her computer just play (not create) most of the videos and media out on the net?

That and whats the difference betwix DivX 3.1 and 5.0 (I noticed some kind of debate somewhere on which codec a person needs on their computer).
