I believe the RIAA is a lil busy at the current moment. They've been moving on from P2P network to attacking bit torrent trackers. Give em time, I'm they'll throw a hissy fit over it sooner or later.x_rex30 wrote:Enough said is just closing your opinion to make it a conclusion of the fact of the matter, witch it's not. Fact: the RIAA prioritizes people who make money from piracy.
Fact: they are running out of targets.
Probable Fact: when they run out of actual pirate targets, chances are very good the RIAA will go after hobbyists.
The way things are going, the Org will be a target, sooner or later. About the only way to avoid that would be if things change before the RIAA gets to us. Of course, there is the whole creative work argument, which they may be somewhat legally hesitant to take on, but that's a whole different can on beans, and not one I want to open here.

I also want to add that the potential near "destruction" of this community by entities such as the RIAA might NOT be a bad thing in the long run. The AMV community, in my opinion, is growing at an alarming rate. This can be seen by the hundreds upon hundreds of DBZ videos and such being made. More than likely, an attack on this community by the RIAA would target THOSE AMV makers far more than it would attack those of us who have a serious, dedicated interest.
The primary problem we have is that this community is too centralized. If the .org itself were ever attacked (through the courts or by electronic warefare), it would nearly obliterate everything (except maybe the AIM chat room). Which BTW is why I always thought that the .org and the message boards should have been kept seperate on seperate servers. That way if one went down it wouldn't affect the other.
In the future Phade/AD or whoever is in charge may be faced with the task of moving the entire site/community to foreign servers in order to protect themselves legally from entities such as the RIAA. And further, they may be forced to put tighter restrictions on uploading in order to prevent electronic warfare based attacks, possibly even implement tighter log in procedures, with random image based codes to prevent bot attacks (like the kind that Neopets now uses).
The bottom line is that there is the potential and even high probability that this community will be attacked, however on the whole it'll do more to cut out the weeds than it will to really damage our interest.
On a plust note, the RIAA does have a habit of staying away from communities that I happen to be involved with. Back when they threatened me with a lawsuit regarding that Napster unban FAQ I wrote, I made it perfectly clear to them that if they even so much as looked at a particular pirating group or community that I was involved with that I would go on the offensive and see that their precious DMCA was ripped to pieces right along with all their bullshit scare tactics...and since then it's been REAL quiet in all the places I regularly hang out in.

Without turning this into a discussion of the apocalypse of the AMV community (Because I'm not saying the RIAA WON'T attack us sooner or later, there's a good chance they might) and going back to the point of the topic:
I don't think showing AMVs at GameStop out of boredom or what have you can and will be the target of lawsuits and such by the RIAA. Like I said, one, it's not enough evidence to convict anyone of. Two, there are plenty of other things that the RIAA that are far more obvious, such as the centrilized popularity that Whee mentioned. (IE: The bad Linkinball Z videos that are made nearly every day by the truckload)
That said, let me make my stance clear: I'm not saying the RIAA won't be up our crotches at some point, but when they do, it's not going to be over GameStop. It's going to be the found out about this site, the P2P sharing of AMVs, or something along those lines. Saying they'll start spreading from an act of boredom from GameStop is like saying they're going to stop you and your best from trading a burnt CD on your local street corner from where they were watching from the curb of a 24 hour steakout. It just ain't gonna happen like that.

*has gotten tired of the bullshit and just doens't feel like putting forth the effort of arguing anymore*
Alright, back to the original theme of this topic.
I wouldn't mind my AMV being aired inside at any store. It would make me feel appreciated to have someone out of the blue, put on my AMV just because they liked it and showed it to many viewers. Personally - I had to do an AMV for art class (hasn't been completely finished yet) and I loved showing it to the entire class. I KNOW this has nothing to do with copyright infringement, lawsuits, or using my material without asking permission. But what I'm implementing is that I liked it when a ton of people were able to see my video. Now as for the people who take offense to it. I have no beef with you, I respect your boundries on that. I just don't see a reason why. BUT - there's no need for me to.

I would think it would be cool to walk into a store and see one of my vids. I put my work out on the web for people to see it. like has been said many times.
And also for all those creators who are worried about not getting credit for others showing their work in public This might help reduce your worries

I believe that the DMCA could be changed if they attacked the right people on this site. Many of the well-known creators buy both the music and the anime source they use. Combining that with the fact that the American public is beginning to dislike/hates the RIAA (of course that's a generalization). I think of it this way: if they went to court and had the cajones to use a jury, they couldn't hide the fact that they already made money from person x. It would seem as a persuit of more money to the jury, who may very well be involved in some other pirating scheme, and thus result in weaker fines. Even without a jury, I would expect that a judge would see it the same way.Wheee_It's_Me! wrote:On a plust note, the RIAA does have a habit of staying away from communities that I happen to be involved with. The bottom line is, for many it could be argued. Granted it breaks the DMCA when we rip DVDs, but the DVDs had to come from somewhere. The same goes for music CDs. There's already money in someone's pocket, why do they need more?
