AMV Slump?

Post by Beowulf » Fri Jul 23, 2004 3:12 pm

I know every year someone claims that AMVs are getting worse and worse and that the current year is in a slump. These claims usually happen around the summer time because all the majors are making their AWA videos.

However, this year I think there is a legitimate slump in the amount of quality videos and the quality of those "quality videos". None of the old schoolers have really made anything and a few seem to be fading away, like Ermac and Aluminum. AD's fulltime job is running the site so I doubt if he can make anything that frequently. There is a flood of terrible videos (but that has always been the case), and the general tastes of the public seem to be effects effects effects and less editing, which is incredibly discouraging (thats an understatment).

Is this just me? I've only seen about 5 videos this year that I like and 3 of those are from Fluxmeister so that shouldn't even really count. What happend? Where are the action videos? Where are the story videos? Where are the character profiles? A HUGE majority of the videos coming out today are exclusively drama/romance. Where is the new blood?

Is everyone working on their opus video for AWA? Is that why we haven't had a good video here in months? I want to hear from all you editors. Why has everyone just stopped all of a sudden

I don't think this year is a slump. Well, the old school editors are idle with AMVs, but there are some new very impressive creators which got my attention.
It's a big mistake only watching out for videos by editors who have proven themselves in the past, you miss the best with doing that, seriously ;)

I suggest that you wait for the upcoming Instumentality Project rose4emily is putting together (hopefully it'll be completed by the end of the summer :?). I bet all of those videos will contain the style you're looking from editors you probably never heard of (well except for Otohiko  ).

*shrugs*

I don't think it's quite that bad. Hell look at me, I churned out like 2 videos this year and I'll be done with a 3rd and 4th one by the end of September.

Maybe the uber well known "old schoolers" aren't doing much, but there's a lot of good videos being put out. What about Zero Tolerance's "Toushi"? Or Pie Row's "Holy Crap"? Or Norskotaku's remaster of "Hands Down"? Plenty more out there too.

Um, did you see my AMV "Feeling This" or Zero Tolerance's "Toushi"?!
Where are the story videos?
I'm workin on one myself.

Actually I tend to see more character profiles than I do drama/romance videos...*shrugs*

I think maybe you're like obsessed with this AWA thing, heck I don't even know what that is. o_O

I haven't noticed a slump per se, although I'm sure there are less videos by the top editors due to large conventions such as AWA (as you stated). I'm sure there'll be a flood of them afterwards, however.
In the meantime, I'd recommend this one as an example of vid that's both new and good :

Well alot of videos made today are shit but then again there are alot more people making them. In the past the editors came from college and had studied visual arts etc and got their first experience on editing decks. Now making a video is alot easier so even someone as stupid as I can make one MUWAHAAHHAHAHA also most of the videos are being churned out by kids now and are based to popular music which is really shitty right now.

When I hit reply, your post wasn't there yet; didn't see it until afterwards. So I wasn't giving it as an example of a character profile, rather of something fun to watch that was also new. I still get a kick out of it after having seen it a few times, so it's one I'd recommend.
