OST question
I was watching Azumanga Daioh tonight (ep 6, I think--the sports festival ep) and was shocked to hear one of the songs from the FLCL OST playing in the background--the song Yorii Gallop. It's the song that's played during the relay race in Azumanga Daioh and (I think) during the Ninamori-robot-head scene in FLCL. So the questions are--is that song just a famous song that, for some reason, I don't know? Did the Pillows work on the Azumanga soundtrack as well? Or am I just on crack and hearing things?

I don't believe pillows did that one - some searching indicates the artist is 'Kabarofski'
What's more, I believe I've heard the said piece of music in an old (60's vintage) Russian cartoon.

That would make sense. Come to think of it, I think the song sounded vaguely familiar when I first heard it on FLCL, so that'd probably be why.Otohiko wrote:I don't believe pillows did that one - some searching indicates the artist is 'Kabarofski'

Yea, possibly. I really couldn't find any info on this 'Kabarofski', or anything about another cartoon where this may have been used, but for all we know, Gainax could have been paying homage to another, older, obscure animated production

Well, I looked around some online for "Kabarofsky" and found little to nothing--a search on "Kabalevsky" proved much more fruitful. Though I haven't yet found a specific music sample, I'm pretty sure it was his--"Kabarofsky" is probably the Japanese way of transliterating it.
The funny thing is, thinking back on it, in 9th grade band we played a Kabalevsky song which I hated at the time (mainly because I sucked at playing) and which I now suspect was actually that piece. It was eight years ago so I don't remember for sure. I wonder if I still have the sheet music somewhere...

*edit* Well, what do you know... it's called the Comedian's Gallop. I still want to look for my old sheet music...

Ah, it makes sense now. And that particular piece even seems to be on a CD called 'cartoon classics' - no wonder Gainax decided to include that.
I still haven't found where I first heard it, but yep, that's the right track.
