What to do about a Flaming Opinion?

Post by pinky75910 » Tue Jul 20, 2004 11:34 pm

(I hope I'm in the right Forum.)

Maybe I shouldn't be asking this, but I was really surprised by this. I saw what I thought to be a great vid. In fact later, four other people left opinions agreeing with me. However, one guy with an ax to grind didn't. He left a long, nasty "opinion" tearing down this video, complaining of every little thing, (things I never noticed in the vid, and still don't) clearly intending to hurt, and even insulting the other people who left kind opinions (Including me!) Judging by certain clues in the op, the person was clearly not familiar with the series. I don't know what compelled this person to unleash his unhappy childhood on some innocent amver. It's not my video. But it could be. I don't know how I'd react if I got an "op" like that, I'd probably be in tears. It's not my vid, but I liked it, and this guy was so negative I felt compelled to make this post.

Should you get such a personally directed slamming negative "op" like this, is there any way it can be negated from your total score, or deleted or anything?

I assume you're referring to me. ^_^

My opinion on Pyle's video was indeed quite harsh, however every point I made is quite valid. The difference in opinions is basically the difference between amateur level analysis and what I like to call "l33t" level analysis.

If you ever expect to truly get any better than you already are, you should learn to embrace the hard lined opinions and critiques. If you let them get to you and you don't learn anything from them, then you're basically just a worthless AMV artist. Not that there's anything wrong with just doing a craptastic AMV to express your emotions on some idle Tuesday without any need or want to improve yourself, but then if that was truly your intent, opinions like mine wouldn't hold much meaning.

If you're looking to get your ego stroked, asking for "opinion exchanges" and n00b slurps is the way to go, you'll average around 8 points in most categories. If you want to actually make a REALLY good video, then opinions like mine are what you want most of all.

I can't be sure without knowing which and who's op you're talking about but just from your description it probably wasn't meant as hurtful. People who want to be hurtful give SHORT all 1 reviews. People who want to be helpful give long detailed reviews. Not everyone views ops as a overglorified method of saying 'Way to go'. If you ever get one of these don't cry about it, LEARN from it.

Also, it's no sin to be unfamiliar with the series. You have to keep in mind that AMVs can and will be downloaded by people who haven't seen the show before. If you have to see the show to understand the video that indicates the creator is relying on the show to tell the story instead of telling their own and IMNSHO that is a flaw. At the very least if your video isn't understandable without the show then warn people about that in the description. To give an example, this video (my own, I'm not going to drag someone elses vid in public for a negative example) is totally incomprehensable unless you already know the ending to Eva. I still consider that a weak point (amoung others) to the video but the description warns people that if they don't know Eva they won't understand it then I go on to describe exactly what I was after just in case. I have yet to get a comment about it from someone who hasn't seen Eva, I saved those people the download time by being upfront that they won't understand it.

Depending on the op you may or may not be able to delete it. The proper method is to contact the person who left the op and politely ask them to reconsider. If that doesn't work and you're POSITIVE the op is unfair then you can contact an admin about it. Unless it's a straight 1 'you suck' type of op though chances are the person won't reconsider and the admin won't delete it.

Have you seen my videos?

Hey, I'm new, I'm still learning and I expect to improve. I enjoyed that other vid, I don't know why it angered you so. Maybe you don't need to be so technically skilled just to make a vid that someone else would enjoy. But you told the person to quit? Isn't that a little harsh?

Hatter always knows

Eh, isn't it true that the highest and lowest ops are discounted, at least for top-10% purposes, etc?
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

well, there you go. If the video had any real hopes for that, it probably didn't suffer as a result of just one op.

Nope.
Hey, I'm new, I'm still learning and I expect to improve.
Uh huh.
I enjoyed that other vid, I don't know why it angered you so.
It didn't anger me at all.
Maybe you don't need to be so technically skilled just to make a vid that someone else would enjoy.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who enjoy crap, just look in your TV guide for limitless examples.
But you told the person to quit? Isn't that a little harsh?
Obviously you didn't read my opinion very closely (not surprising since it was like near 900 lines of text including my response).

The specific quote to which you are refering (and taking out of context I might add) reads as follows:

"You know at this point you can do one of three things. Give up. Continue to produce mediocre crap that all the spastic, half retarded, fan boi's and girls will like (which is pretty much ANYTHING as long as it's about their particular interest). Or you can STRIVE TO DO BETTER. Pick one. "

I never told them to just "quit", I gave them the only three possible options they had, their decision is up to them.
