There's only one answer to this question.
"Any band, any song, is good to make an AMV with if you have a solid concept and put together something neat with it."
Heck, I did a video (that I like, despite others opinions) using a song that is 2:30 of almost white-noise sounding stuff (Man or Astro-Man? - Muzak for cybernetics).

what type of video? what type of music? what anime? specifics would really help!
...and what Sousaphonist says is right. Otherwise, this thread will probably just be a "favorites" thread, and there are a lot of those already.
..though if you give a specific anime or type of concept you're thinking of, then people might actually be able to help.

try for instrumental stuff........ but a classical cd, it might work if you're good enough.

I've got some ideas to spare for all of those anime, but if you use downloaded footage instead of buying the DVDs the ideas are wasted on you.Ninjafox wrote:these are the anime i want to make amvs out of
Gunslinger girl
Steel Angel Kurumi
Naruto
Full Metal Alchemist
So, if you can show me that you have the DVDs, than i'll share my ideas with you, if you like my style of music

Music with random clips is how most people first videos look. Heck, it's how a heck of a lot of people's videos look, period.
When you have a song, and an idea that fits an anime, just just have to run with it. That's what I do. If it just doesn't look good to you no matter how you twist it, then stop, and try something else.
Here's a personal example.
I bought the new The Ramsus cd when it came out. They're a Finnish band, but they sound pretty good in English. I like the whole CD, and I really wanted to do a music video to one of the songs. But I just couldn't decide on the anime to use (kind of the opposite of your problem, but in a way, it's similar). I listened to each song, trying to pick up anything that screamed "THIS GOES WITH THIS ANIME!" And finally, it hit me. The final track, "F-F-Falling!", which is, as I understand the lyrics, about a group of friends starting a garage band and dreaming big. This sorta fit Idol Project, which is a really stupid little anime that I don't recommend anyone buy ever. Unless you like sillyness, which I do. But try as I might, I can't get the video to 'flow' right. So, scrapped. I moved on and made other videos.
LONG POINTLESS STORY OVER, HERE'S A SUGGESTION
So, you seem to like action anime. Action anime are easy and hard to make videos to. Easy in the sense that lots happens on the screen, making it easy to fit 'beats'. Hard, in the sense that by fitting 'beats' you usually lose any coherent story or plot. Which is okay, if you don't care about story or plot. I recommend taking your favorite song and your favorite anime and just sit there, listening to the song, watching the anime. Look for parallels. Are there scenes where the show is happy/sad, to fit with the song being happy/sad? Don't worry about the lyrics as much as the feelings you get from them. Try to match the pace of the song to the pace of the clips. Fast, hard songs need something happening on the screen....but not always. Fit the feelings, and you'll be halfway to making good AMVs. Heck, if I followed my own advice, I might start making better ones.
