Post by madmag9999 » Sat Jul 10, 2004 2:20 am

when i rightclick on my c drive and check how much space is taken it reports 27.5gb when in reality only 17gb is taken. what could be causeing this problem and should i be worried?

there are always factors such as system restore and other windows apps that take space behind the scenes... like when i turned off my system restore i got back like 10-12ish gbs back

I really don't think XP system restore should take that much space. I've never used it though, so I may be wrong. I did a Crtl+A, Alt + Enter combo and the total listed was close to the total in the properties for the drive. About 100MB off actually, but it's like that for all my drives. A mystery indeed >_>!

There's also the Recycle Bin (which, I believe, doesn't show up even if you do show hidden files... at least not if you've got Norton...) and the page file to take into account. Those can eat up a good chunk of a hard drive.

my page file isnt 10gigs and i disabled my recycling bin becouse i have no use for it. i guess pagefile+system resotre and some other stuff could explain this. i never had this kinda thing happen on my other windows systems. i am quite disapointed that xp hides stuff from me like this. :x

It keeps doing this to me as well. I was deleting shit really fast the other day, and the space was literally being taken back up before my eyes. Do some registry hacking, and delete anything you dont recognize as being part of windows or a program you installed. Alot of spyware and malware installs itself without your knowledge and eats up hd space. Plus check your system for worms and viruses. They have a tendancy to replicate and chew your hd space up. Last of all, scan your system and defrag it. it worked for me. My hard drive showed 1.6 gb free when before it had only been showing 45mb. (this was on my 5gb system partition)

I don't know what's going on with your computers you two. I've used XP before, but I had system restore disabled as well as the recycling bin.

Randomly deleting stuff in the registry is a bad idea and wayyyy too time consuming. Just get AdAware or Searc & Destroy to make sure no spyware is on there.

I haven't really heard of spyware stealing 10GB of your hard drive though... :?
