advice on codecs

Post by conspheretrix » Sun Jul 04, 2004 4:01 pm

alright heres the scenareo: I have some .ogm files and I used virtual dub mod to convert them to a file in which i could import into windows movie maker 2. I used the "div x 5.1 .1" codec, but there was a flickering line at the top of the video. And I did not like that. And then I tried "Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V3", and every once in awhile I would see this Image
Now i'm not sure which of the following codecs I should use now. It takes forever to convert the episodes, so I dont want to do trial and error, and then find one that I like and then find out later that something like the image above happens during the video every minute or so.

here are the codecs that i can use (the last one is x vid): Image

Please consult the Guides on this matter, in the section entitled "Downloaded footage". My advice is to get a better source to work with, such as DVDs or VHS. If that's entirely impossible, however, convert your files using a lossless, intraframe codec such as Huffyuv or Lagarith.

use virtualdubmod.
Choose direct stream copy.
save as avi.
Then you can convert to whatever you want.
save as huffyuv.

I've found that if you try to use the .ogg stuff, then the people in your video start moving like they are seizuring or something.

You will find however that the quality isn't all that great compared to using original source.

if space is a problem, the next best codec to use in my opinion is DV, if its available, or picmedia's Mjpeg codec. Both are lossy codecs, so not as good as hufyuv, but do not rely on keyframes, so you'll have no problems editing them.
