Have you heard of this before?

Post by Coffee 54 » Sat Jul 03, 2004 3:20 pm

Here's my sob story. The first time I insert a DVD into my DVD-ROM, it reads fine, but slowly after a couple of uses it gets harder and harder to detect until eventually my computer doesn't read it at all.
I can put in a DVD it hasn't read in a before and its fine. I can put the unreadable DVD into one of my other home players and its fine. Has anyone else had this problem?

Quick fixes:

Optical drive cleaners - have you run one through recently? If your drive laser is dirty, reading becomes more difficult.

Replace the drive - not nearly as convenient, but it would fix the problem, ne?

I'll most likely end up doing both.

1. Reinstall your drivers.
2. Check for new updates.
3. Run some diagnostics on your drive.

does your dvd consistently read data disks? Does it read both standard cd and dvd disks? If you just purchased it, take it back and get a new one right away before the stores warranty expires.

Well,

You can make a NEW THREAD in the Video SOFTWARE Help forum, instead of hijacking this one.

That'll probably get your farther, fool.

mmmmm...ur laser must be getting old...

the readers laser diode only have a rough lifespan usage of around 10000 work hours if im right...thats the standard for all class 1 laser devices.

either the lense is dirty or ur lasers alredy kapuut....and i think the lateer is the most probable^^

you could have been the unlucky one to fall on a short fused didode if ur DVD drive isint that old

The drive is four years old and I have put it through alot, my burner, which I got at the same time, died about a year ago. The DVD has yet to develop a problem with data discs but I'm afraid that's not far behind. I'll try cleaning first, but it'll most likey take a new drive.
On the plus side half my DVD collection is still scaned in, so I can use those, and maybe if I can catch my DVD-ROM on a good day I can at least pull pieces off some of my others.
