Avoiding Filler

Post by JasonCross » Sat Jul 03, 2004 1:35 am

I've been in the process of creating my first AMV off an on for a few months. The idea is Ah My Goddess: The Movie done to "Gone Away" by The Offspring. Yes, I'm well aware the band has been overused in the past, but this particular song has rarely been put to good use, if ever. The concept I've been using is a action-drama vid. The theme of loss in both the song and the animation are what I'm trying to tie in with eachother. The issues arrise with trying to balance footage that goes with the music and footage that goes with the lyrics. It's dumb to go from a scene with two characters in tears to a motocycle race simply because of a fast-paced chorus. How do you deal with trying to maintain your vision while also having enough footage to actually complete the video?

You're talking about an AMG vid and you think the BAND is what's overused? Just once I want to see an AMG romance AMV that focuses on a lesbian threesome between Skuld, Urd, and Belladandy, I think that's the only thing left in an AMG vid I haven't seen. Oh well, don't mind me, do what you want.

To answer your question one way is to try and find footage that matches both, in the case of AMG you could pick footage of something semi-actiony that threatens to split the two. Also keep in mind that pacing is relative, you could use something slower than a motorcycle ride and as long as it's faster paced than the people crying it'll probably work out.

There are other ways of doing it, LOTS of other ways, but really the best answer is to play around with it and figure out a way you think works.

Also, you can use a series of fast cuts to match the pace, and have the clips be similar in feeling to your last clip. That way, you don't lose your continuity, and you can still have beat sync.

I'm actually running into the same problem with one of the vids i'm working on now, it's a Gun Smith Cats vid, and i'm running out of footage for a bit, simply because Gun Smith Cats only has 3 episodes. My solution to that is just cut up the song and take out parts that are repetative. THat saves time and footage, and creates a vid that can be fresh and not repetative, because that is what you took oout with the audio-editing

I got the same problem too. I was doing a vid to "Haunted" by Evanessence, but I discovered that the quiet begining lasted too long, and the actiony ending is too short for my anime. Waaaaah! I didn't have enough footage for the first half, and too much for the end. Forced to use a lot of filler, and then cut out a lot of great footage I wanted to use.

I feel it is unworthy of posting now.
