Sounds like a good idea, but it's not - not anymore now that ATX power supplies are holding up the PCI bus for features like wake-on-LAN. It's safer to unplug the PC from the wall. If you don't have a grounding strap, try keeping your forearms in contact with the case frame while you're working on it.

More comments on the power cord idea are here:

another idea would b to get an old cable ...pull out the prongs used for the power input leaving only the ground prong out( the rounded off one) and have that one in the wall...no power going to the comp but its still grounded^^

Um... it still wouldn't help. Floors are insulated... where is the charge supposed to go.

Also you don't need to touch you house plumbing. Just the side of the case. The reason is so you and the computer have equal charges. No reason to have an equal charge to the plumbing because you'd still not have the same charge as the equipment you are about the touch.

On the contrary touch the house plumbing because its grounded amd much better than the chassi by itself

And i said a rudimentary ground...of course no the best one...
itll send any small discharges to be expanded within the power cable...

not the best but itll help still...

touching the chassi yes i agree is also a good thing no doubt there...though the bathrooms rite next to my room so...dont really mind going to th plumbing^^ i like to take nooo chances watsoever...

no correns right. u only have to touch the chassie if anything. iv put togeather 5 computers and iv installed many upgrades in them, and i never bother to discharge myself anymore. everything seems to work for me. in the begining i was cosies and tryed to do all i can. but now i take the part slam it in there and it all works. im guessing the whole precousion thing is exactly that just a precousion not a rule. but meh do it if u want better safe then sorry i guess.

You don't seem to understand what I'm saying. The only thing that has to be the same charge is yourself and your computer.

ESD sensitive devices can be potentially damaged it they suddenly meet a charge different than what they already are. When you touch your case or attach an ESD wrist strap, you drain or add a charge to the ESD sensitive device in a non-destructive way.

Touching your plumbing before touching you computer will only increase the difference in charge between yourself and the computer. So not only does it not help but it potentially worsens the situation.

It won't hurt to leave the cord plugged into the computer itself when you disconnect the plug from the wall, but it won't help either with ESD at all. :?

And I've been trained because the job I do requires a working knowledge of the subject. Nothing like frying a network device or Promina card because you didn't ground yourself to the chassis correctly.
