Samurai X Question

Post by Jimmy Balls-O-Steel » Mon Jun 28, 2004 2:54 pm

This might seem like kind of a stupid question to you guys, but I'm still kind of a n00b, so bear with me. (Yes, I know that Samurai X is actually Kenshin.)

ADV Films released the OVA's Trust and Betrayal seperately. Then they released Trust & Betrayal: Director's Cut. My question is, is Trust & Betrayal: Director's Cut just a re-release of the Trust and Betrayal OVA's? I ask because I haven't seen any of these, and this question has actually been bugging me for quite some time.

Because I'm a loon and bought all 3.. Trust /betrayal/ and later on the DC.

The DC is pretty much a re-release but instead of as 4 episodes with 2 dvd's its releases as one full movie. (no need to fast forward through credits YAY!) and i think a scene or two extra. They redid the sound(or atleast I think they did.) if you wanted to see which to buy go for the DC save yourself a few bucks.

The Director's Cut is, like DK said, a version of Trust and Betrayal edited into one continuous movie rather than four separate episodes.

The biggest difference between the two releases is that the Trust and Betrayal DVDs are full screen, while the Director's Cut DVD is widescreen. Unfortunately, it's a letterboxed widescreen, cropping the full screen version. There are a few new minor scenes in the Director's Cut version, but my personal feeling is that they're not worth the loss of so much (nearly a quarter) of the original picture.

I'm going to get technical for a moment. (I understand what you really mean. I'm just nit picking.) Please don't hate me.

Letterboxing doesn't necessarily mean losing part of the picture. Most things that are letterboxed were originally widescreen, and therefore are perfectly fine. However, you did mention cropping, which is the real problem here - cropping causes you to loose part of your picture. Besides, I can't really think of a reason that widescreen is better than 4:3 if there's no additional video in the widescreen (and worse yet, some missing video!)

Anyhow, I just didn't want letterboxing to a get a bad name. 8)

I guess that means that, should I ever go buy any of it, it will be the Directo's Cut, mainly because the only place I can find any of this in my town, all three of the releases are $40 each (that's in Canadian dollars). That's right, I can either pay $40 for both of them edited into a movie with a few extra scenes, or pay $80 for the two of them separate.

Way to go, ADV films. I bet your customers must be extremely proud of you!

That's a pretty unfair statement considering that the original version (2 seperate disks) were around for YEARS before the re-release. It's not really ADV's fault that people aren't lowering the price of the older version accordingly. Blame the idiots that are selling it for twice the price for no reason.

I still think the original 2 disc format is sweet if for no other reason, for the reversable covers. (english on 1 side, original Japanese on the other)
