Popular Classical Musical Pieces

Post by paulrowe » Mon Jun 28, 2004 3:50 am

Someone was looking some time ago regarding finding classical music and not knowing what to look for and the like. I was hoping that I might be able to help in that department, but I wasn't sure which topic I should post this in. I thought that this was probably the best one, so here goes.

The All-Classical radio station in the area in which I live (that being Portland, OR, though it is also broadcast over the internet) annually requests listeners for their favorite pieces of classical music. They then play the 100 pieces that got the most highly-placed rankings. This is typically done between Christmas and New Year's, but it was re-broadcast this year in preparation for July 4th.

Not included in this list are some well-known and familiar songs. Some that I can think of are:
<UL>
<LI>"Gymnopedies" by Eric Satee</LI>
<LI>"The Funeral March for a Marionette" by Charles Gunot</LI>
<LI>"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by Paul Dukat</LI>
<LI>"Pavonne for a Dead Princess" by Maurice Ravel</LI>
</UL>
Of course, there are many others (including one that I just can't remember the name for). Anyway, here is the Top 100 list from the end of 2003 as voted for by the listeners of <A HREF="http://www.allclassical.org/">All-Classical 89.9</A> in Portland, OR.

I apologize for any spelling errors, though I did my best to make sure that I typed it in correctly. I hope that this will help some of you who are looking for pieces and/or composers to use or search for when wanting classical music.

(I've previewed this thing twice and it isn't translating the table code that I have in here as a table. I'm hoping that it will show up as a table when I submit it. If it doesn't, I would appreciate feedback from a moderator or such as to how to do such a thing.)
