What does one need to organize an AMV contest?

Post by inthesto » Fri Jun 25, 2004 9:29 am

I've been throwing around this idea to hold an AMV contest of my own (if you look at my profile, it shouldn't be too hard to guess what the theme might be :P).

However, by looking around the AMV Contests forum, most of the contests seem at least fairly well-organized, and many of them have websites dedicated to host information and the videos.

Since I lack both of the aforementioned (organization skills and webspace), I'm wondering if this is really a good idea or not. Besides, 90% of things I do tend to fall apart during the execution stage.

I'll lend you the webspace.

Do you mean host/organize an actual contest for a convention, or just an online contest?

Online contests are generally just a group of kids (no offense, anyone... I know there are some decent ones) who tell people to send them videos. They watch them. They pick a winner. The end. No real substance to it. Again, there are some decent and well-known ones out there (I don't know much about it, but the Mindwarp contest(s) come to mind).

If you're talking for a convention...

It's a lot of work. It requires a lot of hardware (computer AND non-computer), it requires a lot of patience, it requires a pretty solid technical knowledge of digital video, it requires a lot of dedication, it requires... a lot more. It's not something I would suggest anyone jump into or consider unless you're damn serious about it.

Don't get me wrong, I love doing it... and I'll continue to do it. As an AMV editor myself, I like to think I know how I'd want my video treated and such for a convention's contest... and I really go out of my way to do so for the people who submit. It really isn't something that just anyone should (could?) do, even if they really wanted to.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I'm running my first video contest solely through this forum, and email, no webspace setup for it. I think SQ is doing the same. You need not even the webspace, just some degree of organization, the money for the prize, and some good judges ;p
