Significance of Trains?

For the sake of research I finished the Haibane series tonight. Very good and worth watching. And the scene in question definitely fits the pattern.

There's an older anime called Windaria that has a variation on the train theme. Instead of a train, there's a large airship that floats around the world collecting the souls of the dead (represented by ghostly red, bird-like shapes).

Also, speaking of another train involving death, there's Doom Train in final fantasy 6 which also carries the dead to the afterlife.

yeah that doom train think is kinda more of a cliche than anything. my god, its even the theme of an eppisode of hey arnold (ah, nicelodeon, thoughs we're the days).
