Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

Hi, I'm new so here is my intro...

Post by GraFX Boy » Sun Jun 20, 2004 1:48 pm

My name is John (GraFX Boy) and for years I have been a strong fan of Japanese feature films, Animes, Magna books and other Japanese published magazines. I have studied the works of Mamoru Oshii, Katsuhiro Ôtomo and Akira Kurosawa in their ways of concepting, storytelling and directing films. Akira Kurosawa has strongly impacted our cinema by influencing directors such as Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. I have studied the works of video game producers, Hideo Kojima, Yuji Naka and Shigeru Miyamoto, who literally change the direction of video games. When I mean study, I’m not just talking about playing but their reasoning and theory about the process of concepting, developing and producing story arcs for their particular title they are creating. As for Anime’s that I admire my list probably sounds like a typical cliché; Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. There are several more, but these are the ones that I really can view over and over and find something new each time I watched them.

I have been producing commercials, documentaries, docu-dramas for about 11 years. Currently I work for a television ministry as Director of Digital Post Production. I have moved more into the corporate side of our company but I still get the opportunity to produce and be creative…which is what I LOVE to do!!!

Last Wednesday (06.16.04), I had to present a development concept to the Vice President of our company. I needed to open with a overview of animation styles in the market place. He originally wanted it in PowerPoint...boring. I edited a montage of different animations to music. I would have normally edited in our AVID suite but it was scheduled with other clients. SO this is the first time I edited with Final Cut Pro HD. I had a very close friend who is a FCP editor help me.

There are a lot of clips from the Animatrix mainly because I had that tape on VHS where everything else was on DVD. The network where I work uses both Sony Beta SP and Sony Digi Beta to digitize into our AVID Media Composers and Final Cut Pro workstations. We had to run the DVD's through sync generators and in the time base correctors built into the Beta decks. I simply did not have enough time to rip the DVDs and transcode then into a format where AVID or FCP could use for source video clips.

The presentation was shown to the Chairman, President and Vice President of our company to show the powerful reach and different styles of animation. Since the presentation, we have been green-lighted to develop an anime series that will be produced and marketed in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines and Japan.

Here is Part I of that presentation. I will post a WM8 version shortly.

interesting, not bad at all.
Its just as you said though, just a montage of anime put to music, no real story, mood, effects or insane action synch to keep us ocupied, which basically means little replay value. But it was edited good.

You won't get as many hits with it being in RM though, post an AVI or mpeg or something for everyone else. Alot of people avoid wmm too.

Update WM8 Version:

This is not classified as a AMV, like I stated previously it was for a presentation for the powers to be to have a better understanding of different animation styles.

Hey GraFX Boy !

Actually I really liked your video ! ! !
Even if there is no scenario, no crazy effects etc., I think the video really succeed in its goal : showing the whole art of animation !
Plus I found it not boring at all, the rhythm is maintained from the very begining to the end.

Please could you tell us what your anime will be about ? (if you know it yet ! :))

P.S.: about rm, actually yes it's not the best type of file, but contrary to AM_4000 I do not consider "wmv" as a poor type...maybe he can download my amv "Birds" (see in my signature...) to see what wmv can be...

Hey AMV_4000 & Gui,

Thanks for the feedback, both good and bad. I have learned early on working in the television and film industry whatever you create, once it leaves your hands it belongs to the audience. For this particular piece, it was mainly to make aware of the different animations styles out in the current marketplace for our board of directors.

[Please could you tell us what your anime will be about ? (if you know it yet ! ]

Because of non-disclosures and negotiations going on, I'm not at liberty. As things move forward and become finalize I'm sure our Marketing/PR departments will allow me to share news updates as they become available.

The main audience we are focusing our effort is for China. We are currently working with agencies for reviewing the resumes of directors, art directors and writing teams through China, Hong Kong, Japan and the Philippines. We are also looking with agencies in L.A. as well. A concept has been developed by will ultimately be decided by the team being hired on.

[dudes new to the forums... he makes a post about himself... then he doesn’t reply within 2 hours... whets up with that??}

Right now it's 13 hours ahead in Beijing, China which is morning as of now. Everyone is coming into the office and I'm constantly talking on the phones, IM and responding to e-mails. So being on the east coast of the USA my work hours doesn't end when I come home because half way around the world everyone else is waking up.

As for the encoding goes, I turned over the tapes to our streaming team. I personal prefer the progressive downloads of QuickTime. But for streaming, I'm at their mercies. Thanks again for the critiques and I hope to continue dialoging with you guys.
