Excessive use of AE....a new trend?

Well, videos with effects of this type have been around for years before Euphoria, but I guess they have become more common these days. I personally have nothing against videos that have pointless flashy effects. I simply care about whether the video is *good* or not. Euphoria is a very good video in my opinion. The effects really give it a distinct style and overall feeling that it would lack without them. Many of the newer videos these days might do the same types of effects just as well, but thats not going to stop the overall video from sucking. I really see it as no different from making bad lip sync, or similar. Theres just the people that know how to use it, and those that dont. My 2 cents.

I never implied that I have an inherent dislike of all effects nor that I don't appreciate the technical finesse needed to execute them properly. I was simply stating that I've seen a number of instances in which effects were tossed in haphazardly in a rather obvious attempt to cover up other shortcomings. What I'm saying is that basically, effects can enhance a video greatly, but if there's nothing behind them, then it's moot. Well-rounded is the key concept.

if a video isnt good in a state where its just cut and paested clips, before effects are added, then adding effects is only gona make it worse. lets all remember that while it is allways geting easier to do flashy effects, and while they generaly do look prety cool, the foundation of a music video is in finding the right scene for the right section of a song. without that, an amv is nothing

I agree. Too many people rely too much on "fancy" and not "good". Very few people can mix the two sucessfully. I don't like the 'blow them away visually, and maybe they won't realise the content sucks' additude. I made one video with a plethora of effects because I wanted a learning experience with the limits I could push myself too. It's quite possibly the worst video I've done. There's still a backstory, and it's still a pretty good video, but it's just not as emotional as my other ones.
I tend to stay away from effects like ... something that avoids something else completely. I'd rather go for the 'wow' effect of the emotion rather than the overstimulation.

Heh, I guess you could say that I too have a little pet peeve for distractions.
I guess another reason why this struck me as odd is because when I was showing some people on another forum my latest video, which I won't bother to advertise, they said they didn't like it because it didn't have enough editing and cuts and the sorts. However, some people eventually said they had grown to like it and had said since they were used to so many cuts and effects from certain other videos, they kinda were biased when judging mine.
Heh, maybe I'm just not a fan of higher standards 8)

Nah, to me, it's not what you do, it's how (well) you do it.
If you can use tricky effects in a convincing fashion, I'll praise you. If you can use tricky effects, but poorly and at random, I won't praise you. That's about it, really.
Myself, I don't touch effects unless they're somewhere in the area of 'ass-simple' to make

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

The program I turned onto is 3D Studio Max. It's a pain in the ass even more than AE, but it does the job just as good or even better in some situations. 3D Max offers a lot of possibilities, but on higher levels than AE. You can animate any effect you imagine yourself (example: this video). Some effects like the ones at 0:52 or 1:30 are very unlikely to be made in AE (I just might be ignorant, but I still doubt it). In this video particulaty I avoided unnecessary stuff and only added 3D effects where it was required for timing. I do believe that's the way effects should be used...helping the timing. Some creators also like to play with background or character animating which is also a good way if it's in corelation with the concept.
When it's an overkill, people will notice and feel it no matter how new they are to AMV's.
