I definetly have to write out my ideas because im usually working on something else. and they just fall into a queue. Most of my newer work requires months worth of planning/research before i even rip the dvd's.
(most of my video's stay like this for about a month. but right now 6 vids are in this stage)

Out of curiosity, do you, Random Editor, jump right into editing a new idea while it's fresh, or do you wait a while, listen to the song or watch the series several times, and see if you still like it after a longer time? Do people tend to do it one way or the other, or does it depend on the video?

I'm not asking anybody to decide the fate of any projects, I just wondered.
usualy i wait a while, then start it, a month later i realise that i dont have the skill to do what i wanted and i give up

I write/plan out my ideas as soon as I get them - even if I know I'll probably never bother doing it. I've only had two that I really let 'gestate'. One, I just didn't have the software to time right (before I got wmm2 and could actually *see* the audio markers), the other involved detailed, repetitive, time consuming frame-by-frame editing. Needless to say I didn't bother attempting it for about 9 mnths - almost as long as I've been editing. There are others that are vague - those can wait for eternity because until I have something concrete to write down, they're just 'urges' without real concepts. Those tend to sit till I get inspiration on exactly what it is about the combos/songs that I want to see made. That's what I do, after all - make vids I want to see made. No rush on that most of the time, but if I have the urge, motivation/inspiration, and desire to edit a new idea, I'm not going to put it off unless I'm in the middle of something. I enjoy nothing better than jumping head first into a video after mapping it out. Sort of like completing a puzzle that I designed - I want to see if the pieces fit right, and frame it to hang on my wall for my own viewing pleasure. Any guests who happen to enjoy it as well - great.

I don't see any reason to put off doing something I enjoy. The planning is the boring part (typing it up, ripping) - it's the editing that really kicks off the fun. I'm no masochist, I don't put off my fun to punish myself, only if I can't make what it is I want to see made (for whatever reason).

Both. I have some large projects that are basically set peices that I'm doing soley for the purpose of impressing the hell out of my students, and possibly entering into a Con at some point.

On the other hand I get so fed up with minutia that every once in a while I just skim the music library and pick something. Like... lipsyncing a whole episode of "the tick" with .hack characters or something. Ironically, most of the stuff that actually gets completed usually is started on a whim, meaning that I'm doing way more work by trying to avoid what I really 'need' to be doing.

In general, I get on them as soon as I possibly can. Sometimes I have to put them on hold for a while, since other things a little more important have to take priority, but if an idea strikes me and I have nothing important to do, it's probably going to be done within the next few days.

I usually come up with several ideas at a time.. and usually i work them in the order that i thought about them first.. (for some reason)

i take a lotta breaks from AMVs a lot.. like weekly.. so.. yea, i get plenty of time for thought

I usually do a lot of planning in my head. I'll get an idea and listen to the song about 25 times a day for a week and if it still clicks, I'll go at it.

i guess i do half and half. to me if i start the video within 2 weeks that is pretty fast. they usually are the sucky ones but entertaining to myself. i haven't not finished a project yet. it's like i might as well finish what i started and see what i got. my better videos had planning for at least a month. that is especially true if i am waiting for some of the dvds to come out (current situation).

Here lately it's been "OMG! IDEA! MUST EDIT!" for me..but those seem to rarely get very far :?

I think my better vids have been the ones where I've reined in the urge to edit and wait for a little bit..listening to the song..going over things in my head...so I do a little of both..but more of the first here lately

It depends wheter i have the footage or not, and i never edit concecutivly with the same serie. So, if i have 5 ideas on the same series i'll try to spread them out as much as possible. And it also depends on if i have the skills ready to make it, i recently made a video that was quite good because i finally found out how to do a certain thing, and i was waiting a bit before i could do that.
So, no, mostly i wait a while, sometimes more that a year (depends if the series is available on DVD or not, i only use DVD footage)
