In Japanese? Or in nonsensical English?

For purists, yeah, but for those of us who just want to watch the show, it makes the characters seem to speak gibberish, and disrupts the flow of things.
and put those stupid ass ADV-notes into the show like they did with Excel Saga...it worked with ES so why not AD? Then they could have kept the puns...i mean half the dubs out now have everyone speaking in english then say one random japanese word outta nowhere...
...examples? Other than -chan, -san etc, which aren't words but titles. I've never run into this, so I guess I happened to watch the other half of ALL dubs. ;)
so they could have done that with azu and just put the notes to say what the joke was/why and what the words meant.
In the middle of the scene? Do they have time for us to read all of that without disrupting the flow?
Even fansubs do a perfect job of keeping puns funny by doing that
Um, no. A lot of the jokes in AD weren't funny for me - or I didn't get them - until I looked up information about the cultural background on other sites. And even then, it's more a case of recognizing "Oh, that was funny," then genuinely getting the joke. I'm not going to get the joke, because I don't have the same cultural background. I can just recognize that a joke has been made.

Note, this is only in some cases, like the stereotypical vaudeville lines thrown into AD ("What in the heck?" in the dub) - I can think, "Oh, that's that typical comedy routine like I read about," but there isn't that gut-reaction recognition that would make it genuinely funny.
so i know its not impossible for a GIANT COMPANY to explain a joke and keep it funny, when those fansubbers can do it easily. :?
I don't think the fansubbers did a "perfect" job. They did what they could, but I don't think it's possible. Ever heard of the phrase "lost in translation" (other than the movie title)? Languages aren't like math, you can't substitute one for the other without tweaking some of the meanings or connotations. It's a delicate balance, and much harder than I think the average fan tends to realize.

lol it did work  but quote still doesnt =/

so ill just respond to one thing..... Why would my ADV-notes not work? You say that people wont be able to read them......i dont see why not. They worked perfectly fine in Excel Saga which has the same amount of cultural humor in it...and those helped...so yeah....im not seeing how you can say ADV-notes wouldnt work when they did with ES. :?

Hmmm... loved Azumanga, but I seriously doubt I'll watch the dubbed version. This series had to many jokes that depended on the Japanese language plus the fact that once you've seen it in Japanese why would you want to see it any other way? :]

Oh and i just remembered something Sarah. They left the part about hemhroids (i cant spell so meh, you know what i mean :? ) in Japanese in the dub, as i suggested they should do for more jokes...and that worked fine...well as fine as dub can be...so now i have two questions for you.

1. Why would the ADV-note things not work, they have before in a show with the same amount of cultural humor.

and

2. Why couldnt they just have left the other jokes that dealt with the language in japanese like they did with this one?
