How many MPEG4 codecs do you have installed? What are they? Did you use codec packs or install them indevidually? Do you know what an OGM and MKV file are? Do you have what you need installed to watch them?

This is mostly to those who do more watching than editing and compressing.

when I used to just watch, I had divx5, microsoft mpeg4 codec, and that was it. since I started ediing, I experimented with 3vix, so its installed though i don;t use it anymore, and Xvid found its way on there now. I used to use codec packs, but they screw up my system too much in the past so I stopped using them.

I've heard of OGM but don;t know much about it, and MKV I've never heard of before.

I have enough codecs to play all kinds of files. I can play every file on my system, all the files on this site, and .ogm files. I don't know how to play .mkv files, though. If this is a thread to ask such a question, I guess I'll ask it know. What do you need for .mkv files?

you can read up on it at matroska.org

As far as I know you only need the video and audio codecs and directshow filters for the specific file you want to watch and a player that supports it and it, but I'm probably wrong,

It should be noted that the official matroska site is currently down. When it gets back up, all you need is either the matroska pack off the site, or a player that supports matroaska internally, such as Media Player Classic.

I've never used a codec pack.

I currently have:

MS-MPEG4v1
MS-MPEG4v2
DivX ;-) 3.11 Alpha
DivX 4?
DivX 5.0.5
XviD 1.0.something
Tried 3ivx, uninstalled it afterwards
ffdshow (don't know the version #)

I've heard of Matroska but never used it.
I've got quite a few .OGM's, plus the Ogg DS filter, SubTitDS, and DirectVobSub. (Mostly due to one of my friends who's part of a group that does DVD backups of anime with DivX OGM's.)
