English dubbing styles and techniques

Someperson you have to remember here in the US we have limited voice actors and my theory is that certain companies just use like the same 20 or so people to do the dubs.

Yes, I have noticed that too (that most dubbing companies tend to stick with a certain ring of voice actors). I am also well aware that we have a limited voice actors

I'm sure Viz has done a good job with other anime dubs. All I'm saying is that Project Arms is not one of them and is a bad example of English voices fitting personalities of characters and sounding good in general.

I feel EXACTLY the same way. I stopped watching it just because of that. He's just not the same character

Seriously, though... I just want the dubs to sound natural and the names to be pronounced properly. A lot of dubs have been ruined imho because the names have been mispronounced. Take Inu Yasha for example. How hard is it to say the name "Kagome"? Three simple syllables, emphasis on the first, and they can't get it right...

i feel the same way. some dubs are ok but most of them just suck. the voice actors cant speak right and cant pronounce half the stuff. i also hate it when they make the character have a southern accent as someperson also metiond. i mostly just stick with subs unless the dub is really good and sounds natural.

There is an anime called Cowboy Bebop.... You should check out the dub! (I'm being cynical)

Seriously, it is probably one of the best dubbed anime EVER.

Well based on the dubs that I will actually tolerate, (Nightwalker, SM1, and ....Slayers the Motion Picture...oh and Cardcaptors...wow four

) I prefer it when they try to match the Japanese voices. (Exception Cardcaptors).

I find that when they don't, the characters tend to sound stereotypical.
Like whiny teenagers, or just generally over the top.

I also prefer VAs who actually consider emotion and voice inflections. Emotion doesn't mean raising the volume of your voice...without changing the pitch...geez it drives me crazy when they do that ;_;

Interesting points you guys made. About that "southern" accent one of you guys mentioned, you understand the English VAs needed some sort of equilivance to the Osakan accent (even though half the time it sucks horribly). How would you imitate that type of voice?

......Is this about Mitsune from Love Hina..... The japanese voice actor had an Osakan accent. The idiots who dubbed Love Hina had the great idea of giving Mitsune a American Southern accent (Texan accent) just because Osakan accent is considered a "southern accent" in Japan.... The results....pissed the living crap out of me.

In Abenobashi the two main characters have southern accents becuase they're from kyoto. Then there's that one guy (his name escapes me, sorry) from Rurouni Kenshin. The one with the long whip-like sword and the red oufit (he's a member of Shishio's little gang). I could go on but I will spare you the pain.
