beyond my abilities, but... (Saikano - U2)

Post by drunken_physicist » Fri Jun 11, 2004 8:30 pm

I'd like to see a skilled editor (i.e., not me) put together Saishuu Heiki Kanojo and the U2 song "Until the End of the World". An action/romance sort of thing (in the spirit of the anime) is what I have in mind I guess. I won't say more than that, since it wouldn't be my project in any case, but if anybody is interested (or just wondering what the heck I'm thinking) I could go into a little more detail.

but note -- I think this would be a difficult video (the intrumental bit between the second and third verse would take some skilled effects work for the video to keep up with the music, among other difficulties) which is why I'm pretty sure I'll never do it. But hopefully somebody else will think it's a good idea and pick up on it! hence the post.

Oh no, you brought up U2.

I had considered an UTEOTW vid with another series (two guesses...it had to do with the Judas connection), but it fell by the wayside because I just wasn't ready for it.

It is an awesome song, however, and I heartily second somebody working on it, especially if they can get into the whole allegorical/narrative thread of the lyrics, which I've always found to be very interesting. (It was based on a poem narrated by Judas, addressed to Jesus. Listen to it sometime. IIRC they talk about it in Flanagan's Bible, as well as opening the song with a comment to that effect in Zoo TV and I am a gifrickinggantic dork so I'll stop there.)

There aren't any vids to it yet on the org, and it has a lot of dimensions that are workable in relation to the lyrics as well as having a great mysterious/exotic sound. The instrumental break is a bit long, but with a good concept I think you could get through it without much trouble. And the buildup in the outro is phenomenal.

I'll stop now.

oh my. To be fair, I was only recently introduced to the whole U2 phenomenon, but still, I ought to have noticed that in the song. In any case, since I was ignorant of the Judas allegory when I had the idea, I don't immediately see how it would fit in with saikano... Shuji screws up, to be sure, but I don't think there's the necessary betrayal to cast him as a Judas. And now that you've enlightened me, I definitely agree that that allegory ought to be reflected in the video...

If there is such a betrayal, it would definitely be towards the end where

ah... spoiler alert I guess

haha -- well, that would be my take on it at least.
and thanks for the heads up on the song! (My U2 fanatic friend who's got me onto them would probably have been pretty disappointed in me for missing the allusion...)

I totally missed it until I read the book, and I still loved the song, so it does make an interesting narrative on its own. I mean, you could ignore that part of it, but I think it's an interesting idea to play along with if you can manage to work it in.
