[What anime series would be a box set, and what won't?]

Post by EvaXephon » Thu Jun 10, 2004 5:25 pm

...Haha, just joking.

My real question is...What are the deciding factors when it comes to what anime series will be turned into a box set, and what won't?

According to my own hypothesis, the major deciding factor would be directly linked to this formula:

Length of time the anime has been released times Number of DVDs sold divided by the single DVD pricing in comparison to other series'

The higher that number is, the higher the likelyhood of a boxed set. Still, nothing's certain. =' /

If only that's true for the Cardcaptor Sakura series. :(

I forgot to mention that the U.S. popularity of the series is an important variable. It has to be well-accepted over here, too. =' /

I don't think there are really any factors (or at least any official factors). Anyone feel free to correct me on this.

So true!

Anyways, box sets...hmm...well...most companies would rather not put out box sets since they can get more money out of people through the sale of individual DVDs. Or they release box sets AFTER the people have already bought the individual ones (curses Geneon!). So the avid collectors would pay for the box as well.

I don't know if I like or dislike the new ADV trend of releasing volume 1 + box + something extra....I sort of do, it's just more expensive =/

I think it has to do with the money they can get for a box set vs individual DVDs most. It's also just a choice the company makes. Popular series tend to get into box sets more often. AnimEigo releases pretty much all their series in box sets, usually the box set first, then individuals. :D Mmm, time to check their site for updates on my next UY fix. Must have more Lum...

I can see how this idea works out in theory: release the first volume with the box to the interested fans. If they like the first volume so much that they wan't to get the others, they already have the box. But there are two flaws here. The first one you already mentioned, too expensive. The second, what if someone wants to take a chance with a series? What if they've read enough reviews on a series, or watched a couple of the episodes at a con, and they are fully convinced that they want to get the entire series, all at once? There are a couple series that I don't want to get volume by volume that aren't available in a box set. I think some companies need to do some thinking before continuing this trend, 'cause it kind of ticks me off.
Probably too busy to be here right now.
