Adding subtitles

A few quick questions on adding subtitles to videos.

For background info, I'm planning on making a video to a Japanese song, but the lyrics are important so I'd like to have a translation of them playing below the video.

Which program is the best for doing this? I have Adobe Premiere 6.5 and I know I can add subtitles using the titles, though if there's an easier way than that, I'm certainly open to suggestions. I've heard rumor that you can somehow add subtitles in Virtual Dub, so I was wondering if there was any truth to that. Also, does anyone happen to know what program(s) fansubbers use for this purpose?

This next part is more a matter of opinion... I have a few choices in my subtitles. I can just put them at the bottom of the video, where subtitles reside in dvds, on fansubs, etc. Or I could clip a bit off the bottom of the video and put the subtitles on the black space remaining there. I was thinking that the latter method would prove to be better for readability. Any opinions on this?

There should be a Subtitler filter in VirtualDub, which lets you add Sub Station Alpha (.ssa) subtitles to your finished video. Subtitle Workshop is a free and easy program to create them, if you find the original SSA too complicated like me.

And if you don't want to make the subs "hard", you can distribute a small subtitle text file with the video. To view the subtitles along with the video, your viewers then need to have VobSub installed. The video file and the subtitle file should be in the same directory and have identical names.

avisynth can do this also, with VSfilter. this is hardsub.

some players can do softsub, i think mpc can, yo just need the text file.
