Add 'Sentimental' Category

Post by dwchang » Mon Jun 07, 2004 10:22 am

I've always thought a "Sentimental" category would be a nice addition. There have been at least two times where I wanna mark the video as such, but have to settle for "Drama" when in reality the video isn't a pure drama video.

I think this would also help come VCA time. I know I'm not the only one who was annoyed to see every video made in 2003 listed under "Sentimental" when nominating videos.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Or alternatively you could not request things that require site reprogramming until us new moderators have worked out how the hell the site works :)

with the release of my latest videos Kanami's Song (shamless plug) i was actually thinking about making the same suggestion dwchang.

yep, your not the only one.

i think this just depends on your view of what 'drama' IS

so in your case, you see sentimental as something different than drama, but others may think that sentiment is just one way to show drama

could you elaborate more on what you think the difference may be to help why you think it needs it's own category?
If you're reading this, you've gone too far...PREPARE FOR RETRIBUTION!!
Don't judge an AMV by it's anime.. u nooB ;D

Err...well you're right in that it's a difference of opinion, but I'll try I guess. I think examples would probably be the best way to try:

I think Memories Dance and Self-Titled are great examples of "Sentimental" videos. Sure they're also dramatic in one way or another, but ultimately they are sentimental videos that usually take the viewer's feelings into account. They also aren't really story or character-driven which is what I think most drama videos are .

I guess it sounds lame, but they make you feel all warm and fuzzy without having a real plot or character-centric theme.

The reason I thought of this (well I have in the past, but moreso now) was since my newest video is similar (if not nearly identical in theme and content >_<) in that it has no story (watch it, you'll see), no character-centric themes and is just a happy/fun video that is more for the viewer. I made it so that people could watch it and smile. That's a reflection of emotion and that's the very definition of sentimental.

I guess the term is pretty broad since almost anything can be a reflection of emotions or appeal to that part of a person, but well...just watch the vids and hopefully you'll see a distinction between "true pure drama" and "sentimental."

interestingly enough, my entry to the Animasia project is identical to what you described here, but executed slightly diferently. Still it is just a feel good ghibli based AMV with no plot, or story, and I had the same thoughts as to what I was going to list it under in the video profile. It actually has little to no drama (unlike memories dance) and is actually more fun, but people often times associate "fun" with comedy and dance, and it is nothing like that. So yes I think we need a sentimental category also. I also know we are asking for alot of different things from the admins all at the same time, aparantly from admins that have yet to figure out all the workings of the site, so it may be a while ;p

but just for the record, I vote for sentimental category aswell, it is afterall used in the VCAs and by numerous big cons as a category seperate from Drama. ^_^

You know, if this and/or the proposed Instrumental category actually end up being instituted, we'll probably want to change the rule to "Please don't mark more than FOUR categories."
