Cymbal Crash techniques

Post by Lounge Fly » Wed Jun 02, 2004 10:52 pm

I'm not entirely sure where this would fit on this board so I tried here.

Can anyone tell me their techniques for editing to a cymbal crash? What do you use or utilize? I am tired of using a white color matte or some other mediocre video filter and I was wondering if anyone could tell me some other techniques for them.

How about the "Shatter Effect" in Adobe After Effects. I think there may be a plug-in for Adobe Premiere that creates the same kind of effect. The only example I can think of right now is the opening of "Eternal Damnation"
by NHMK (Fluxmeister). He uses alot of solarized effects to.

Well if you're talking about straight digital effects you could blur the video in and out during the crash, possibly add a colored overlay flash right at the strike point for added effect.

Then of course you can go the better right and try find something IN the animation itself that sorta exemplifies the symbol crash. For example a car crash, having the video run at full speed, with the point of impact right at the symbol point of impact and then slow down the rest of the clip, the crash aftermath or shockwave to match the length of the symbol reverberation.

It depends a lot on what it sounds like really. If its a really major sound, I would probably try to sync some sort of major collision or something in the anime to it, explosion or something. If its like minor and repeating, you might get away with some fades to white or something.

Ah well the video already has plenty of little fades to it. I'll try to look for something in the anime itself, but I don't know if it will work at that point.
And the shattered effect may be a good idea. I'll have to check it out. Thanks you all

If you're using Premiere then you've probably noticed the tab labeled 'video'. Over half of the options in that tab can be used to accent the song in one way or another. For example you can raise/lower the brightness, change the color balance, blur, ripple, transform, invert, twirl, switch to B&W, crystallize, pointillize, lens flare, lightning, emboss, glow, solarize, add noise, or texturize the clip. Then there's the quicktime filter which can, at times, produce some really odd results. That's not even going into the fact that you can mix in a few frames of another clip, do fast cuts, jump the footage back half a second, use semi-transparent overlays, make borders which do odd things, or load up another program like AE and use it's effects. And if none of those are to your liking you can do as others mention and time punches/explosions/etc to the beat. Really there are so many different ways to highlight an element of the song that any answer short of 'just play around till you find something you like' doesn't fully answer your question.

There are also even more advanced methods, watch the second opening to Yu Yu Hakusho for a good example of punch hole overlays. The opening to the anime series Canvas also does some pretty impressive stuff as far as moving static elements with frame jumps on the facial expressions, quite a neat trick.

There's really a whole slew of things you can do amist of a cymbol crash. For anyone who's watched enough trailers for action films have probably seen a large deal of ideas involving that.

Frankly if you can find an actual "scene" in the show that would fit the sound, you might want to try that out first.

I have 6.5. I could never understand quicktime effects so I never use them.

As for the video effects tab, I know what some of them do off hand (some I need to be reminded by watching), but I just can't see them working alone. I am using some of your ideas though so I don't mind if you keep them coming :)
