My current favorite is Suki (can't wait to see the last volume of this); with Snow Drop (which is actually Korean) in a close second.

I don't think Piro would agree with that, even if it HAS found its way into at least one AMV that comes to mind.

Readers: The Azumanga manga is unique and brilliant. All 4 panel strips (think snoopy) and incredibly funny. The sense of timing is fantastic. Yeah, I know saying 'timing' doesn't make sense in manga, but, you'll understand.

And I just read the second volume of Hot Gimmick and it's brilliant. The characters rock, and it's got a really twisty plot. Second best shoujo manga I've read...

But...

KILL ME KISS ME!!! It's the best thing since sliced bread, even tho it's not officially manga as it's Korean. (I think they call it manwa). It's the best crossdressing-fashion-bishi-fighting-romance story evarrrrr. It's even got occasional chibi comedy fun. Any shoujo fan should invest in the first novel. Plus it'll give you enough clothing ideas for the rest of your life. Add it to your Amazon wishlist now, you!. The plot premise is a little silly mind, but it takes the mick out of it more than you'll want it too it's that good.

Ok, I better shut up before I look any more of an idiot .

I haven't read a lot of manga, but of that which I've read I think AKIRA is the best.

As most people have mentioned, just about anything by Clamp is a guaranteed success. They play around with various genre's and have a truly unique style.

For you specifically I'd recommend X/1999, it's a dark, gothic type, with lotsa action ^_^

Other Clamp titles that I love and would recommend: Magic Knight Rayearth (fantasy) Wish (Romance, fantasy) xXx Holic (fantasy? Drama) Chobits (sci-fi romance)

***

Moving on...

Sailor Moon manga (Naoko Takeuchi)> anime. Mahou no shojo/romance VERY COOL

Hot Gimmick (Miki Aihara), second fave, greatest Shojo EVER!

Other titles that I like, Saiyuki (action) Fushigi Yugi (romance/fantasy) Excel Saga (comedy) , Boys over Flowers (shojo), Gravitation (shonen-ai) Naruto (action) ...

my list goes on.
