Most of the live-action Japanese stuff I've seen is horror. A few that I'd recommend would be :
Cure
Dark Water
Kourei
Whispering Corridors
Ringu

Cure (Kyua) would be my favorite among these. Really good movie, definitely worth a watch.

Wow so many awesome films in this thread!

Gotta make random crazy lists of films I like;

anime-fan-classics:
Battle Royale, Ringu and sequals, Audition, Seance

Akiru Kurosawa:
Yojimbo, Kagemusha, Seven Samurai (want to watch more, have heard Rashmon is very good)

Takeshi Kitano:
Dolls, Hana-bi, Sonatine, A Scene by the Sea, Brother, the new Zatiochi, (but not Violent Cop lol),

I'm a bit of a Kitano fan, love all his arty films. Especially Dolls and Hana-Bi. And Sonatine has some of the most fun scenes evar.

and bum: how did you get to see Kitchen? I've been wanting it ages - read the book by Banana Yoshimoto a while ago and absolutely loved it. No idea how they could make it into a film, but I've heard it's beautifully done. This dichotomy makes me want to see it bad.

I also really wanna sea Love & Pop by Hideaki Anno. If anyone has any information on how to track it down in any format I would give them plenty a lovin'. (please pm me if you can't say on board)

Love & Pop is available on R2, so I'm sure you can get it from amazon japan or cd japan. I gotta warn you, tho. imo, it's crap. while i prefer his other film, Shikijitsu, it isn't worth the japanese dvd prices.

I've checked before. But anyway I just searched Amazon.co.uk for it under both "love & pop" and "love and pop" and couldn't find it. Then I did the same for amazon.com ...

oh wait it is there now XD, as R1, being released on July 6th.

cheers.

I you are talking about The Twins Effect (I think its US title is Vampire Effect), that's a HK movie which is mainly a merchandising tool for Hong Kong pop stars Twins.

...Well, you know, they're Japanese, so they're all hyped up on that Opium stuff...

XD Aw, I jest.

I saw a cool Japanese movie yesterday about these two people who were in love, but their spirits were put into the bodies of other people, so they had to go through great lengths to get reunited, but I forgot what it was called. ...Sorry! >_<

Shogun Assassin
Last Samurai (name might not be correct, but Sonny Chiba plays Jubei)
