Video Codec Configuration

I could use a little help. I've seen 500MB videos that look like crap and 60MB video's that look like there strait of the DVD. So my question is; What codecs do you all use, and how do you have them configured.

use divx or xvid

a bitrate around 1400 is good for dvd source

i use standard 1 pass xvid at 1400kbps, with lame acm audio at 192kbps

Also, two pass can be very helpful if you have a general idea of how big a file you want (or if it has to be a certain size.)

Encode quality is much more dependent on what your source material is like, not how you encode it.
