Fansubs are illeagal?

I read the rules for the 3 time. I got it stuck in my head that downloaded matirial was from another AMV. It just got into my head that fansubs are downloaded! Are they just as bad as AMV resplicing? Or if its downloaded before the licencing of the anime is it okay?
I don't know, I guess thats why I'm here asking. I just want some more detailed rules.

I just read that article thingy. Thats very informative. I now understand much many things. I just thougth that out of the contry there may be a little lenience.

Frig, even taping a TV show for your own use is illegal in the US. You invite your your friend to watch it, you've distributed it.

Even so, it is important for those who make, distribute, trade, or posess fansubs to understand that the law is being broken and that if you get arrested for something else, your collection will probably lengthen the list of charges if it is found.

How ironic, since the copyright of the character of Arsene Lupin is a copyright of the Estate of Maurice LeBlanc....so if you have a Lupin fansub it would seem you'd be (potentially) doubly guilty...
