I know a lot of editors get their inspiration while driving and listening to music. I recall Vic saying something about concentrating on the repeating lines in the road and how it helps...

Having too much spare time helps. As for other things, well, I go about my day and sometimes Lady Inspiration stikes (she doesn't pull her puches, eiither).

i sacrifice one small child every month to the AMV Gods in an attempt to bring forth the inspiration required to create my videos :O

either that or the same as most people....watch the anime, hear the song, and think "hey that'd work good"
