Philosophies on Opinioins?

Post by eadsja » Sun May 16, 2004 9:17 pm

At what point should you consider yourself worthy of garnishing opinions on the site? I mean, I realized this week that I am just learning to tell my video from a hole in the ground and the stuff that goes into it.

When does experience allow you to judge someone elses work?

Judge?

Post by Ijnek » Sun May 16, 2004 9:21 pm

Judge? I don't really JUDGE people's work... I just blindly compliment. ^_^

Seriously though, I wouldn't really call it judging; if you're giving honest critizism or pointing out the good pieces, or both... then I think the artist will appreciate it! So I think you should be able to leave an opinion whenever you have one. ^^

Opinions, like AMVs, require practice I guess. Both improve over time.

I have left some really lousy opinions before. Mainly because I let personal intuition get in the way of fair judging. But I can see that I have been improving in how I look at AMVs and what exatly am I looking for when trying to decide on a score.

Can I write the perfect op? Well that would imply I have the perfect point of view...which I don't.

But it is ultimately one's own opinion. You can't lie if all you are saying is how you feel (unless you are just out to inflate a score).

An opinion is exactly that: an opinion. Some are just better thought out than others. OK, a lot better thought out and, by extension, written.

As to when you know enough to criticize, well, let me put it like this. When you can tell what works and what doesn't, you've found the beginning of the Zen path. When you know why, you are truly on the path. When you can explain it and explain how to improve, you are a Zen Master.

I just have this concept that I need to know what I am talking about before I speak... I guess I will just make a few more, learn a bit, then really get into the uber feedback...

... For now, I am the grass hopper...

Even the true Masters will likely claim to be no more than grasshoppers. It is not said "only the truly wise man knows that he is a fool'?

Really. I didn't make that up. The more you know, the more you can see that you lack.

This is a good question.

All I know is that almost all of the rude and stupid opinions I've goten have come from people who aren't creators or creators who just painfully suck. Theres a lot to be said for that.

Also, I think theres a lot of factors that go into this discussion, primarily personality type. Personable people have an easier time telling people their opinions than someone who is more reserved.

I just suggest that when giving an op, don't be stupid. You can be qualified to give an op out, just make sure that your op is useful in someway. Like don't do something like this:

Give straight 10s on a video and then say that the video is the best damn thing you've ever seen and say that it has nothing bad about it what so ever. This kind of op gives no help to the creator. And even if you think a video deserves all 10s, at least say why.

Also, if you give an op, make sure that it's longer than a few words. Like one I got once said: Damn good effort. Thanks alot. That kind of op doens't help anyone out and doesn't make much sense either.

As long as you can get beyond crap like "I like it" or "I didn't like it," you're set. Seriously, even five minutes of thought can produce at least a 100 word opinion.

I figure if you have an opinion on the video it's probably about time for you to start leaving opinions on a video. That being said, I notice that the better I get at making the video look exactly like I wanted the better I get at giving constructive opinions. Maybe that's just me though.
