Errr... is there a real difference between "comic" and "graphic novel" anyway, besides the I-want-to-sound-grown-up tone of "graphic novel"?
But I'll bite.
If I were going to split them up, I'd say that a book that stands alone, not part of a series, is better called a GN. (1-book compilations of monthlies are close enough to "one book" for me - you know, it's 100 pages or less, thereabouts.) I can't think of any offhand in the manga world, but I'm sure they're out there. Ongoing series are comics. I call manga "comics" in general speech, because "graphic novel" is long and sounds too much like "I'm trying very hard to not admit that I'm 26 and read comic books." ;P
