I won't state whether I think that, or the change in general, is a good or bad thing.
if people are honest with their ratings, it won;t get on the list unless its good ;p And if its good, its a good thing, so more people will find out about it.

I do see your and Zarxrax's point, I just still think that an ADDED feature (not a change to the existing one) dealing with top rated new videos would be a nice feature. Those that don't like could still continue to use just the old one.
Actually, I wasn't talking about your proposition, I was talking about the new system.

But something like what you're suggesting might be cool, yeah.

The videos are being affected by the other videos according to what your saying "C = the mean score across all videos (average all vids)" But the average of all vids is constantly changing which will constantly change your scores.
The average for all videos is recalculated each time an opinion is added so that the average is always correct.

If the average is recalculated each time wouldn't my average be recalculated due to fact that it is a part of the new system.

Yes, and they are just like they always have been. If your video gets a new opinion, the average and score for your video will have a large modification if you have a few opinions but a small modification if you have a large number of opinions.

If an opinion is added or modified for any other video, the scores for all videos are again recalculated since the overall average has changed. The impact to all other videos is very small since the overall average will change only very slightly since there are ~60,000 opinions in the system.

This full recalculation doesn't happen that often since new/modified opinions are not entered very often. The star scale system has 21 times the number of opinions even though the opinions system has been around for a much longer time than the star scale.

I hope this helps.

So what you are saying is eventually your going to flatten out. That isn't right? For your average should be a roller coster. It should have those high points and then yes as dreadful as it is those low points. Usually everyone is honest so there really isn't a reason for it. I would like to know the reasoning behind it or why the idea came up for this. I'm just curious how this came to be.

I think basically all its saying is that the more opinions you have, the higher you rank. For instance, take 2 vids that both have a score of 9.00. One of them has 10 opinions, and one of them has 100 opinions. The one with 100 opinions will be ranked higher, because more people have found it worthy of writing an opinion on. This makes sense, does it not? If a video is truely worthy of being on the list, then a lot of people will be eager to leave opinions on it.

dwchang explained it pretty well in the site announcements thread

here's what i gathered:

Bayesian Average = (v/(v+m) x R + (m/(v+m) x C

(v/(v+m): increases -> 1 as you get more ops. Example: 8 ops = .53, 100 ops= .93, 500= .99

R: This is your "score," what would have been used under the old system

(m/(v+m): decreases -> 0 as you get more ops. Example 8 ops=.47, 100 ops=.066, 500 ops=.013

C: This is around 8, it won't change much.

Your Bayesian average is a sum of two parts.
(v/(v+m) x R can be thought as the "certainty of your score." Your video becomes more "certain" with more ops.
(m/(v+m) x C can be thought as the "uncertainty of your score." Your video becomes less "uncertain" with more ops.
As you get more ops, (v/(v+m) increases and (m/(v+m) decreases, so the bayesian average shifts towards R.
As you get a higher score, R increases, so the Bayesian average shifts towards a higher number.

I'm glad this new rating system was made. This way people will actually try and advertise their videos more often.

And Gene what are you complaining about? You do op. exchanges all the time. You should just focus on advertising your best video and do more op. exchanges just for that one. :wink:

Besides, it's supposed to be a list of the most popular videos. And that it is now, more so than ever before.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

It's some of the small videos I find on the top 10% when they are first released and have 10 ops or so. So I download them and watch them and they are descent. So some of those videos go unreconized but your right advertising more is what I shall do.

Yes but gene, the alternative are videos that get on the top 10% and then are no longer downloadable so gain no more ops but stay on the top 10% without the chance of anyone being able to add any new opinions.

I find that reviews happen more through word of mouth than the top 10%.
