I would recommend using 2-pass, DivX-indexed XviD - just like the guide describes. It's fairly easy to follow, since the guide is right there, and so far the quality it gave me is very good - big filesizes sometimes though.

I have the FTP reconfigured, but you all should wait a few more hours before trying to use it, as I currently need all the bandwidth I can get to transfer my files back off of my roommate's computer.

It was mainly the file system tables that were corrupted, most of the files themselves were intact, so I was able to rescue most of my stuff off of my hard drive using a command-line interface off of an emergency/rescue cd-booting Linux disk and the FTP server, which was working even though my computer wouldn't even let me get to the login screen (I remembered that some of the daemon processes, like vsftpd, start before the login process, and appearently will still run). I was thus able to work around the missing portions of the file-system table (which for the most part defined system files that kept my computer from finishing the boot cycle but didn't have much to do with my data) by moving my data files to the FTP folder and downloading from the other machine.

All of my really big files (other than the ones for this project) were on an external Firewire drive, instead of the smaller internal drive, so that also helped.

The only really big thing I lost was the Huffman and PNG lossless versions of Third Stone, so there goes a little bit of quality. The compressed one wasn't bad, though, so I think it'll still be perfectly usable if I re-decompress it and clean up a few artifacts and the color section (which I had yet to do anyhow).

As to what everyone else should submit when it gets around time for compiling this thing - Huffmans if possible, very high bit rate whatever else if that's all your editor will let you do. There's no sense in doing more conversions than necessary, so if you can't directly export to a Huffman or XviD, there's not much point in trying to make a .wma an XviD .avi so it can be once again re-encoded into the final XviD video - that'd just add an extra lossy compression step.

instead of whatever the link was before.

I've decided that since I'm also using that server for Direct downloads and links off of my personal website, I might as well just give out the link. Hopefully I won't now have two "inboxes" filling up with spam about increasing the size of my penis and reducing the size my loan payments.

oh - sure - i fix my computer, and then the thread goes dead for the day.

in other news - i got mplayer and all my codecs set up, and it looks like all of the files that have been restored (and i think that's most if not all of the ones that were up there in the first place) aren't at all damaged. that's a relief.

in other other news - in response to too many people assuming based on my username and pimping of princess tutu that i'm either female or gay, i put up a new avatar. dunno if it'll help on the gay assuption, but what girl would pick something as shifty-looking as genzo from niea with his hair and body cut off? without the surf-bum appearal he seems a bit thug-ish to me.

in other other other news - i found the workaround i was looking for for my web-pages in ie. a comment hack that ie will read and everything else will ignore, allowing me to create a separate style-sheet for ie that's been dumbed-down (i mean taylored) to deal with microsoft's retarded (i mean special-needs) handling of positioning values. i have yet to apply it to fixing the look of my woodworking and art pages, though.

in other(x4) news the doc for editing video footage in linux has been started.

i still need to make up some text-title-images to finish off my vid.

that's good that you got your comp fixed. but the ftp server seems to be down still.

as for your v2.0, it looks good, and the color looks real neat, but i'm still seeing the black flashes.

I know this is kind of trivial, but you've been spelling my user name wrong Rose. You spell it anubsx00 in the forums and on the ftp too. It's actually anubisx00. All you were missing is the "i" so no big deal. Just wondering if you could change the folder name to anubisx00. However the file name is correctly spelled.

Sorry I'm not trying to be annoying, just thought I'd point it out to you ^_^

so - is the ftp up or down? i've been able to connect to it from my computer and my roommate's laptop - that's how i moved all my files back, and it's set to allow anonymous this and that the same as before, so i don't quite see what the problem could be. are you sure you're using the new address and not the old path - because if it's the old path you're looking for it doesn't exist (i had to copy the files out one by one and not in their directory structure, and didn't think to write it down, so i just set everything up as made the most sense to me now).

downwithpants - the black flashes seem to be some sort of export bug in cinelerra. i can remove them the same way as i did before (convert everything back to a set of .png files, remaster the color part, copy the frame before every extranious black frame over that frame, and re-assemble with mencoder instead of cinelerra). that part that gets me is the error when mamimi's eyes are turning red, as it affects most of the frames in the scene and will be hard to fix while maintaining the motion of the scene. appearently that was some sort of alpha-blending problem where a compositing edit i made on only those frames introduced an extra channel for (unneeded) alpha values that cinelerra read improperly expecting a 24-bit and not 32-bit color stream.

chotto matte - if you downloaded the third stone video you either had it for a couple of days now and are only now writing about it, or you can download from the ftp. not to mention the fact that anubs, err..anubis seems to have been looking at the directory structure. i'm confused.

anubisx00 - oops. egyptian god, got it. and here i thought it was a reference to a past relationship with someone inexperienced. yeah, i'll get on fixing that.

Been out of town for a couple of days but I'm back now. Man I'm exausted...

So I got a new sig/avatar set. The reason? I finnally finished the beta of my video! The problem is that I don't have enough HDD space to export it uncompressed but when I try to use Xvid from premire it turns out craptastical. Any ideas?

you could always try clearing out some hard drive space by burning stuff to cds and then doing the export. when you've exported you can send the file over to me and/or burn that to a set of cds and put your original files back on the hard drive.

or you could get another hard drive (that's what i ended up doing a few months back when i discovered anime, digisubs, amvs, and other digital space-hogs beyond my 256kbps mp3 rips of my entire 100-something cd collection).

or you could export that craptastical xvid and let us see if it really is that bad. you might be able to get a much better result if you fix the q at 2 (the best value that most divx-type codecs can handle without causing problems) and set the keyframe interfal to something really small. the file will be really big for a compressed avi, but maintain a lot more 'information'.

mpeg2, like is found on dvds, maybe? higher bitrate than most xvid files, but smaller than a huffman or, worse yet, a raw.
