Those trailers SUCK, Japan is a land of animation but it is NOT a nation of good trailers. No body makes a trailer like the West. Japanese trailers are nothing but short music videos. 75% of the footage in the 'I Will Dive For You' music video from the Appleseed soundtrack was used in the Appleseed trailer, they didn't even change the timing or anything.
Bandai has made some pretty cool ones recently, but ADV...they know how to market a product, but they sure as hell don't want to spend any money on making a "real" trailer. Same goes for Geneon.
In defense of Japanese video editing, it's just a different style directed toward a different culture/audience. Have you seen the trailer for the new Casshern movie? I thought it was pretty neat for what it was. And have you ever compared the trailers for American movies shown in Japan? Totally different from what we see here. I think the new Vampire Hunter D movie has a trailer for both the US and Japan on the DVD for comparison and they are so different. What it shows is that it's not neccessary to attract Asian audience to see a film by loading a trailer with a lot of fancy editing/effects. Westerners are more eye-candy junkies.
You're right, their trailers are short music videos. So are the opening animation credits for TV series, if you think about it.
