Dark Water, Japanese horror film

Can anyone please explain the end of this movie? Who is Mitsuko? Is Yoshimi her mother? Where does Ikuko fit into all of this? It seems to me Mitsuko is just a silly girl who fell into a water tank. So why does she have anything to do with Yoshimi? Is Yoshimi just feeling Empathatic because she too had a lousy mother, then why would she leave Ikuko for Mitsuko? I DONT GET IT!

How does that make any sence? Misuko died 2 years before present time. so Ikuko would still have been 4 years old and know about it as well. and why did Yoshimi move back in to the same building 2 years later? Im going with the empathy thing.

At the end, Ikuko says it herself : Yoshimi accepted Mitsuko's curse so that Ikuko would be spared. She was doing it to protect Ikuko from the ghost. However, that means that Yoshimi herself becomes a ghost, and is permanently trapped in the apartment with Mitsuko.

hmm... must have missed that. But it makes more sence than Yoshimi being her mother. I still dont see the signaicance of Mitsuko, just some silly girl who accidentally fell into a water tank and died. Nothing as tragic as Ringu, but then again not everything has to be.
