Preview of Tokyo Babylon manga

Post by angelx03 » Mon Apr 19, 2004 6:09 pm

While lurking in the Anime News Network forums, I found a rather interesting link:

Is this what they REALLY say?

From what I can tell, this is a joke. That image is an edited page from the TYO scanlation project. The edges of the erased bubbles are the same, except for the two changed panels, and Leareth (the project's editor) inserted a note in the bottom right corner. Also, TokyoPop's "most recent press release" on the 14th was this one on the 6th, detailing their collaboration with Disney for Cine-Manga; there also have been no more press releases since then.

However, the dialogue is still pretty close to the original (assuming the TYO translation is accurate).

Hokuto's line was changed from (again, from the TYO project) "What happened to the love between the head of the Sumeragi and one of the Sakurazukamori? If things don't change fast, there'll be no progress! Sei-chan, as a man, don't be shy!"

Seishirou's final line was changed from "Am I sexy?"

We'll find out how Tokyopop actually translated it on May 11th, when the first volume comes out (this should be around page 30 of Volume 1).

Don't you know your left flank from your right flank!?
Sorry, sir, I flunked flank.
You flunked flank? Get the flunk out of here!

I really can tell my left from my right, but reading manga sometimes scrambles me momentarily.

Seven. Dates have been announced for the first three.

And yes, Subaru is the coolest character in X.

I really don't know much about these books myself, but a bit of hunting turned up enough interesting stuff to make me want to buy them.

CLAMP Gakuen Kaikigenshou Kenkyuukai (Tokyopop calls it CLAMP School Paranormal Investigators, the websites I found abbreviate it CGK) is a trio of novels, one of which was collaborated on by CLAMP and Tomiyuki Matsumoto, the other two are Matsumoto's alone. The collaboration was the last one published, but is a prequel to the other two. Tokyopop is publishing them in the same order (#1, #2, #0).

There was also a lot more information, along with a small tabletop RPG (I WANT!!!), published in the CLAMP School Public Guide Book, which includes a short manga using the characters from the novels.

The novels are set in the CLAMP School universe (along with 20 Mensou ni Onegai/Man of Many Faces, Duklyon, CCD, X, Tokyo Babylon, and possibly more [I can't remember the CLAMP multiverse well enough off the top of my head]), and follow a group of five students, each a member of the CGK club, with some special abilities that they use to investigate the strange goings-on at the school.

I wasn't able to find any better descriptions of the plot, but I'm sure that the books will find a home on my shelves soon after they're released.
