Direct download star system?

Post by LightningCountX » Fri Apr 16, 2004 7:55 am

I was just wondering if anybody would like to have a star scale system for direct links. Wouldnt there be a way for the org server to track direct downloads and add them to the list on the main page for grading? Just a stupid thought.

The problem with that though is you can't verify if the video was actually downloaded.

Yeah, the local star scale works because the server knows if it has sent all of the file. You can't give a star rating on a video you only downloaded partially AFAIK.

Hey,

AbsoluteDestiny is correct. The reason we can have the star system in the first place is that we know that the server handed out the video file 100% to the downloader. If the file is only partially downloaded, the system does not ask for a star rating. It would be impossible to know if an external linked file was even the right video file let alone if it was downloaded correctly.

Good idea but impossible to implement.

How about making it optional to be able to assign a star rating to any video (while still mandating star ratings for Local downloads)? Like how you can choose a ranking for the videos, you could set a star rating for it too. Then the top stars list could have a filter for all videos or local only.

Hey Zarxrax,

That runs into one of the problems with the old opinions sytem: you don't know if the person leaving the feedback has even seen the video or not. With the start system as it is, you know that the person at least got the entire video (it's up to them to hit the play button and watch the vid for the 3-5 mins that it is).

Some people download videos locally, and never watch cause its lost somewhere on their hardrive and they randomly rate it sometimes. Just something ive seen done before.

I say it would be a cool idea to have mandatory settings on the enter video page like zarxrax. Just my opinion
