Well... I do have to say that they were all popular before people could really do the type of effects that are used so commonly now (or at least they were a hell of a lot harder).

I still maintain that, for a video to be popular, it doesn't need tons of effects. Although, nowadays, people want to see new stuff... and the only way to make something really new and original is to alter the footage you're given using said effects.

This discussion really isn't going anywhere at this point.

We're back to semantics again. I feel that lip-sync, fades to black, overlays, etc are effects and without those elements videos like Sappy Self-Indulgence wouldn't be nearly as entertaining as they are. If we ignore semantics then I think we mostly agree, blatently obvious Euphoria like effects aren't required but good editing (which includes things I call effects and you don't) pretty much is.

Incidently, I thought the awesome use of B&W absolutely made Glory of Love, are you trying to imply that there are people who don't like the video just for that B&W shot?

Let me clarify, I'm not saying *I* think effects are required for a good video, just that they're pretty much required for a popular video. Pyle has stated that his goal is to become one of the popular editors, to the best of my knowledge he never said he wanted to become one of the best editors. Under that viewpoint then Pyle is right that he needs to master effects although I personally don't follow that viewpoint.

I suppose I should point out that I'm being somewhat hyporcritical here because I do have at least one effect crazy video, and it's even the one I'm submitting to Acen in modified form if they ever get the FTP site up. However I did it to learn how to use effects well rather than to become a popular creator and I've since moved on to other aspects of AMVs.
The reason, partially that I want to become a popular editor, is because by then your editing gets noticed. You may be one of the best editors around, but nobody will give a crap about you until you produce something that they know about. And I can say, seriously, that I do know how to edit. I'll be the first one(well, after flint) to say that I'm not the best editor on the .org.

The reason I'm so interested in effects is because before I scored Roxio, I couldn't do them.

*shrugs*

Different sorts I guess.
More men then girls on the forums, is my guess. I would certainly click on a link with the word 'lesbian' then something with the word 'shameless'. :P But that's just me.

I think I've only bitched in two topics, total, but it sure did earn me quite the rep around here. Contrary to what Godix thinks, I've actually been experimenting quite a bit with effects. I'm getting the hang of black and white screen overlays, but not flawlessly :x

Yes. :)

Tell that to Pyle ;)

Really? Hrm...I mean I wont lie, I like how I used it as well, but "made" the video? Wow!

And actually I have gotten an opinion or two that had the B&W stuff under "bad" which is fine since it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I disagree to a degree. I will admit that most of them are "old skool" or whatever and it may have been easier to impress then with the lack of tools and effects that were "mainstream," however I think the reason they're "popular" is simple:

They all consistently make good videos. I think it's as simple as that *shrug*.

Sorry to double post, but anyway this may illustrate my view on effects a little bit (not really saying I'm right since it's just an opinion).

Basically with that B&W sequence, I feel that illustrates what effects do...enhance a video/scene/sequence. I guess I'd be a bit arrogant to say this, but even without it, the video is still more or less there. The concept, timings, syncs, mood, etc. are for the most part there, but adding that small effect to a small sequence enhanced that mood further and added to the overall quality of the video yes? I'll agree there.

However, as I said, all it did was enhance...it did not define the video or what have you. Just enhanced a video further. Now of course what is debateable is if that amount of enhancement is what crosses the threshold between a good video from a not-good video, but we've been debating that since well before this thread.

Make sense?

Why does everyone here assume I am a bad editor, and that all I want to do is get effects so people like me more? Quite a few people give good comments on my recieved opinions. While I haven't recieved very many(4 is the most on one video), they all detail that I am a decent editor(and usually add, 'please add some effects in and it will be excellent')

In Godix's words, I have an obsession with effects. Let me make my pointless little point that I have created 'one'(possibly two, but that wasn't really about me) topic so far about effects.

The reason I want to learn about effects is because I see people who I am just as good as(IMO) get about 40 more ops then I do. Don't ask me to post them because I don't want to get flamed. I figure if I had effects in, people will notice me just as much as them. Also, I like experimenting with stuff like that. So far I've created about 11 different overlays. They aren't that good, but I am learning.

I won't argue that... all I'm saying is that they were part of a much smaller community back then; thus, it was easier for them to be noticed by making good, simple videos. Now it's almost as if good, simple videos are "cult classics" so to speak. Those that appreciate them really appreciate them, but they mostly go unnoticed. I guess the difference between me and Pyle is that I can be content with a few people really appreciating my videos, and he can't.

Have you tried submitting to conventions? I seem to remember that, in a different thread, you made it sound as if you hadn't.
The video I sent to Katsucon got hundreds of hits the week after, and a good number of opinions came with that.

There's also the case of that <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... >Grover fellow, who didn't join the Org until 2003 (by which time, as you know, effects were many, varied, and widespread)... he sent the second video he listed on the Org to Otakon 2003, and it won Best Dramatic/Serious. And IIRC, it was a very simplistic video with almost no effects.

Where was I going with that? Oh yeah. Just goes to show that, even nowadays, you don't need effects to become known.
